feliciakw: (Halloween)
Happy All Hallows' Eve to all my quaint and curious companions.

It's been an odder year than usual, Halloween-wise. I haven't posted any verses from Sweeney Todd or any of my usual Halloween poems or anything.

I haven't done my Halloween baking (I'd fully intended to bake a black velvet cake).

No pumpkin carving (yesterday would have been the perfect day for it).

It's just been . . . Odd.

We do have a fodder shock this year. Yay!

Somehow, I think Geo and I had sort of anticipated celebrating this year with a wee one. Alas, that did not happen.

Although . . . This past Sunday was "Superhero Sunday" at church. All the kids were encouraged to come as their favorite superhero. One of our 4-year-old boys came as Clark Kent changing into Superman. With the hat and the glasses and the Superman shirt under his white shirt and tie. It was adorable.

Baby stories behind the cut )

George and I both participated in a little activity for the grade school kids, too. The children's minister had a group of us dress up as Bible heroes (and heroines). I chose Rahab, because ever since I discovered that she is part of the lineage of Jesus, I've found her story quite fascinating. (It also told me that God can use anybody to get things done.)

And in an unrelated costuming event, George and I did dress for a costume party.

So, you know, an odd year.

Tonight we go to some friends' house to help with trick-or-treat, then new epi of Show!

And on a final note, we were very blessed to be missed by the worst of Sandy. One power blink. That was it. No downed trees, no flooding. Hallelujah!

Say what?

Groundhog's Day.

February 2.

The crocuses are blooming.

What's up with that?
feliciakw: (Autumn)
It's been a good weekend. The weather has been gorgeous, so we took a drive on Skyline Drive yesterday. I also made a from-scratch German chocolate cake for a party today.

Today, we worked with the four-year-olds at church, went to an Octoberfest party (lots of German food--though German chocolate cake is not one of them), then worked a fundraising event for the theater. Oy.

Busy, busy week coming up. I'll try to get my long and rambly up at some point this week, but I might have to divide it into acts, like I did with the Still Life recaps.

I also need to write up about our trip to California, the scripture reading, and our trip to Disneyland.

I just . . . oy.

The sun is shining and the crocuses are starting to bloom. It's nippy, but I have the back door open onto the screened in porch. The fresh air is nice, and the kitties are enjoying it.

And they played "The Weight" on the radio on my way home. I've never heard the actual cut before.

All in all, not a bad day.

They're predicting sun and fairly mild temps today. Here's hoping it's a good one, as my job is kind of wearing me down at the moment.

I've started reading the Book of Proverbs today. One chapter a day gets you through a 31-day month.

Also, Happy Birthday to one Mr. Jensen Ackles, who turns 33 today. Thirty-three is a good number. I like it. It's pretty. A happy birthday to him, and a great year to come. Wishing him friends, fun, family (even if it's by phone), and cake. Or pie. Whichever.

Thirty-three was a pretty good year for me, iirc. I started working at the PAC at the end of 2002. I was also in two really good shows that year: USA and Harvey. I think I also did some traveling to California that year. Thirty-three is a good age to be. *nods*

Gotta go get ready for work.
feliciakw: (Winter)
I'd never heard of thunder snow until last year. I'd never seen it until tonight.

We're getting a heavy, wet snow right now, and driving home from the grocery, the sky lit up in a flash of blue. One of the freakiest things I've ever seen. I asked Geo if it was lightening, and he said yes, the forecast said we were going to get some thunder snow tonight.

Zoinks!

Or rather, Happy Winter Solstice Plus Bonus Full Lunar Eclipse.

Did anyone else get up to see the eclipse last night? Lunar eclipse on the Solstice hasn't happened since 1683.

It was pretty amazing. The full moon was so bright when we went to bed, then when we got up around 3:00am, things were so dark. We had a little bit of cloud cover, but we did get to see the full eclipse. The moon turns red (Geo calls it blood red), and it's pretty wild to see. Very cool. He got a couple good pics with his new camera, but my little camera couldn't pick it up. (I really do need to print out and read the user's manual.)

Geo commented that it's no wonder people used to freak out over something like this. The night gets dark, and the moon gets blotted out and turns (blood) red. Yikes!

Once in a lifetime thing, the timing of this eclipse. Glad we got to see it.
feliciakw: (Christmas - snowy tree)
We finally got the tree decorated on Saturday (Dec. 11). We also went to see a little community theater production of A Christmas Carol in Washington, Va., about half an hour away. Their local community theater has converted an old church into a theater space. I imagine the rooms that are now closed in as the sound and light booths might at one time have been a choir loft. Maybe. The only source of heat was a wood burning stove (thank you, Mr. Franklin), and there was someone sitting beside it feeding it before patrons started arriving. They had approximately 104 folding chairs set up (no pews), so it was a tight squeeze. It was quintessential community theater--the acting was serviceable, but you could tell everyone was having a great time, and the community got a great kick out of it. It was all very quaint and enjoyable.

I miss my home theater. )

We have a light dusting of snow this morning. It probably won't stick around long, but at least it's an indication that Christmas is in the air. It's strange to be hearing on the radio how other counties are under winter advisories and schools are on delays and such. I look out the window and think, "This is hardly anything, let alone worth a school delay." It must be for fog or visibility or something.

Last call for Christmas cards. I expect to be in the office by myself today, so I'm going to try to get those finished--or at least well started.

It's raining. Inside my office. Seriously.

Heavy, heavy rain today, and I've got a waterfall down the wall about five feet from my desk. Plus one over one of the sub-panel/breaker boxes. Plus one in the far corner. Plus one in the middle of the room.

Honestly, if this construction doesn't get underway soon, I don't think I'm going to have an office left to work in.

*weeps*
feliciakw: (Corolla sunrise)
The azalea bushes have exploded. The lilac bushes in the neighborhood are amazing. The weather is gorgeous.

One of the ladies at church complimented me on my performance last week. She said I made her cry and that she was surprised I didn't go into acting as a profession. Just . . . wow.

Geo is coming home this evening. I pick him up at the train depot tonight. He hasn't seen SPN yet.
feliciakw: (Nom nom nom)
March is going out like a lamb today. It's been beautiful and sunny, and I'm trying to stave off a sore throat. The Easter play is this weekend, and I'd really like to be able to, you know, talk. We've got dress rehearsal tonight.

I tried my first recipe out of Tofu Mania. The theme of the book is adding tofu to favorite dishes, rather than focussing on tofu as a main ingredient.

So I tried the mac and cheese. I was really pleased with the results. The cheese sauce, which uses soft tofu, was very much like a fondue and you pour that over your partially cooked macaroni and cubes of firm tofu. It was rather tasty, and smelled wonderful.

I also added cubes of tofu to my lentil soup this afternoon, which never even occurred to me before. I think next time what I'll do is use the soft tofu and use a mixer to puree it and add it in as part of the broth. Either way, since tofu has no flavor of its own, it worked really well in the salty soup (which also felt good on my throat).

I've been enjoying what few con vids are floating around out there, and since I don't think, by this point, anyone is going to post a "complete" (i.e., pieced-together clips to make a complete) con vid, I listened to the audio recording. It's frustrating not to be able to see what's happening when everyone dissolves into raucous laughter, but I must remember to take what I can get. I don't get to go to these things at all, so anything resembling first hand information (vids, audio, photos) is better than nothing. From what I've been able to see and hear, it looks and sounds like the guys were a hoot as usual, and quite relaxed and at ease. Also from what I've seen, dang they looked good.

Tomorrow's Thursday. Just so you know.

March 1 - Yep. Feels like March. Windy and chilly, but warming up. In like a lion, methinks.

I've been looking for some nice St. Patrick's Day cookie cutters. After making that batch of snowflake cookies a couple weeks ago, I'm thinking I need to do that more often. (In fourteen years of marriage, that was the first batch of cut-out cookies I can remember making.) I've also found a soda bread recipe in my bread machine cookbook.

Also, some dude named Jensen Ackles has a birthday today. So, you know. Happy birthday to him.

Just a few brief blurbs from Lifeline Christian Mission and what's going on in Haiti )
feliciakw: (Bible Dean profile)
By request, I'm posting the following link to the newsletter update on the Haiti quake from the mission group I traveled with in the early '90s. I myself went on one of their mission trips to Honduras, but many people from my church made trips to Haiti with Lifeline a regular thing. The leaders and staff of Lifeline have got a heart for the people of the countries where they serve, and their 10-day mission trips are an excellent experience for the uninitiated. As I understand it, there is a women's work team (from different churches around the US) in Haiti right now.

ETA: I just received news that there are a six women from my home church there now.

feliciakw: (Jensen promo)
I've been watching the Smallville DVDs I got recently. Okay, I've been skimming the discs and watching the story line in which Jensen plays a part.

Jason Teague is adorable. Well, for the first half of the season, anyway. And romantic. Unless he's whammied out on day-glo green sports drink. Then he's kinda scary.

I realize Jason kinda goes off the deep end in the second half of the season (which I'm getting into now). And it's really weird (and silly) that I, knowing that he left SV for to be on SPN, now want to watch Jensen's work in chronological order . . . which means starting over at the beginning of S1 SPN. Um, no. No time for that.

While most people might not think it that big a deal, I'm tickled that Jensen got to work with the likes of Jane Seymour. I house managed when she came to the PAC as part of the public library's speaker series, and though I did not get to meet her myself, she was pretty darn awesome. Very interesting and personable. And she had such a good time talking and answering audience questions that we 'bout had to haul her bodily off the stage. :-) Also, I remember first seeing her when she played Serena (Boxy's mom and Apollo's wife) on the original BG back when I was but a lass.

Also, John Glover, whom I don't know a whole lot about, but who I've always gotten the impression is a pretty heavy hitter and quite the coup when a show can cast him. (Or maybe I just think that because Geo and JT once thought that he would be perfect for a roll in one of their movies.)

Speaking of SPN, WIaWSNB continues to rock. For realz. I'm actually quite sorry they lost Raelle Tucker as a writer. She wrote or co-wrote some of the best eps out there. (I also think maybe she had a thing for Dean-peril, which, you know, kinda puts her and me on the same wavelength in that regard.)

The weather has been uncommonly cool this summer. Nothing like the horrible drought we had two summers ago when I first moved here.

Just a random catch-up.

Went to see Watchmen yesterday. It was pretty good. Pretty brutal, though. I was one of only three females that I counted in the theater. This movie is, I believe, fan!boy love. Glad I saw it in the theater. Once was enough.

In keeping with my 2009 goal of developing a new skill (the only of my goals I seem to be successful at, at the moment), I've tried my hand a crochet. I'm working on a project right now that takes two of the basic stitches. FYI, it's addictive. "Just one more row," and before I know it, three hours have passed. So if my LJ presence seems less than it was, that's why.

In order to stave off SPN withdrawal, I've been reviewing some of my DVDs. Also addictive. "I'll just watch this one scene. Oh, but this was a really good ep. Oh! And so was this one! And this one! Oh, and this one!" Trying to decide what of S4 I want to review between now and THURSDAYNEWSPNYAY!!!!

The weather is beautiful today! Geo wants me to help clear out the flower beds, so that's where I'll be going in a few minutes.

I read through and started beating out the script to the Good Friday drama I'm in. Started familiarizing myself with my monologue. It's going to feel really good to get back to scripts I can sink my teeth into. If you're interested in hearing about my drama activities (i.e., how I go about what I do), I'll share. I'm currently trying to draw on my previous experience playing this character to get back in the mindset. I also find I'm drawing on a little bit of the inspiration Jensen offers in the dramatic regard.

Also, Geo and I are getting involved in the formation of a new community theater group. Long story, but there is a desperate need for community theater here in Culpeper. And if I don't get back onto a stage and into a character soon, I'm gonna shrivel up and blow away.

That's about it for now.

More snow

Woke up again this morning to snow. Like, snow. Like, there were three plows out, and I need to shovel the walk, and I wonder if I can make a snowman snow.

Like, "don't come in to work today" snow.

Looking out the back window, I can see the snow on the mountain, and it's really pretty. We're out of birdseed, though, so I hope the birds don't empty the feeders before I can get more.

Maybe today would be a good day to make some homemade bread.

I had a go at some crocheting yesterday. I really need someone to show me how to read patterns, though. Because I'm not at all clear on how to read the things. I'm also wondering if knitting is actually easier. Huh.

I didn't read a book last month, but I got a copy of Angels: God's Secret Agents, by Billy Graham, from [livejournal.com profile] kalquessa (and Mr. Bill). So I think that's going to be my next read. Which will either make SPN that much more interesting, or that much more frustrating. We shall see.

This morning when I woke up (entirely too early for my liking), I looked out the window and thought, "Wow! The moon is really bright." So I got up and went to the window and saw . . .

Snow! The light I was seeing was the lamplight and the moon reflecting off the snow. Not what I was expecting this morning, but pretty.

So I guess that means March came in like a lion.

Oh, and some dude named Jensen Ackles is having a birthday today. Apparently, he's turning 31. But, you know, whatever.

Yesterday, robins all over the yard.

This morning, pretty, fluffy white snow covering the landscape.

I imagine it will be all gone by this afternoon, but this morning it's very pretty.
