My weekend in Ohio )

Upcoming thespian endeavor )

Okay, so, enough babbling from me for now? Yeah, probably. It's overcast and rainy out, and the office is, as usual, very quiet. I'm still in limbo with my medical stuff, but I'm going to try to get to zumba class tonight, if I can get the grocery shopping done.

Just got in from seeing the student production at the PAC. The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. It was hilarious.

And it was so great to see my PAC peeps again. I stopped by the theater yesterday and had nice chats with several of them. And I was delighted that I at least got to cross paths with Tech Guy "Mack." Had a really nice chat with Threepenny Director. And my box office friend, and my old boss.

And Floor Manager Miss C. (who is always enthusiastic to see me) was there.

And one of the Physical Plant gals. (Always be nice to your PP staff. They do stuff that no one else will.)

I miss everyone so much!

I haven't really been following the mainstream media coverage of the disaster in Haiti closely. A story here and there to supplement what I have been following of first hand reports. But what little I have been watching, and the consumer responses to it, seem to be little more than armchair quarterbacking, finding fault with a system like there is a quick fix and "if only this would happen everything would be peachy."

Good intentions won't cut it. )

I - O !!!!!

GO BUCKS!!!

Well, I wasn't sure about the beginning of the new year, because the broadcast we watched of the Rose Bowl Parade (my favorite parade of the year) was rather disappointing. NBC didn't give commentary on how the floats were made, and they didn't show the OSU marching band in the parade, either. (And I missed OU, also.)

BUT . . .

The Bucks beat the Ducks 26 - 17! I'm not into football, but this was a good game to watch, and a good start to the year.

I bet Columbus is going NUTS right now.

Now for a late dinner of pork kielbasa and sauerkraut.

More on the day overall later.

The other night, Geo was watching a DVD of an eclectic assortment of Christmas TV episodes. And one such show was a TV version of Annie Oakley. Well, knowing that there is early footage of the real Annie Oakley, I at first saw the title and thought maybe it was going to be a documentary of some sort. Though it didn't quite look like it. Then I saw the girl come on screen, and I told Geo the obvious: "That's not Annie Oakley." (It didn't look a thing like her.)

So while he was watching, I hopped on-line and discovered that this was an ep of a TV show he was watching. (Which became pretty obvious when it started playing out as a narrative and all.)

But as I've got something of an interest in Annie Oakley, she being from Darke County, where my dad was raised (he was raised in Greenville, to be specific. He's often told me that Annie Oakley taught him everything he knows about guns), I started doing a little surfing.

Now, when I was a wee lass, I did a book report on Annie Oakley. And I've visited her grave in Darke County. But I didn't remember much about her beyond the very basics.

And you know what?

She was fairly awesome.

The Annie Oakley Foundation website is a good place to start. Here's one of the things that impressed me most:

Annie set an example for women and helped change the American public's mind regarding what were appropriate sports and activities for women. She also argued for a woman's right to bear and use firearms, both for sport shooting and for self-defense. She coached more than 2,000 women in firearm safety and shooting. As a public service she traveled the Eastern coast, at her own expense, demonstrating the safe and effective use of firearms for World War I soldiers.

This seems to be a good, brief biography as well.

You know, it just now occurred to me. I've long been partial to the name Phoebe. It conjures images of Gibson Girls and class and refinement. Now I'm wondering if I'm not actually partial to the name because of Phoebe Ann Mosey. Hm . . .

As I'm surfing the 'Net this morning (reordering checks, actually), I came across a bit of information that I knew nothing about before.

Most sports fans will recognize Ohio as the home of the Ohio State Buckeyes. This is completely understandable. OSU is Big Ten.

I'm familiar also with the Bowling Green State University Falcons, because, dude. I'm an alumn. (Even if I never did make it to a single hockey game.)

Then there's the Wright State Raiders, the University of Dayton Flyers, and the Miami University RedHawks (formerly the Redskins, which is how I know them).

But I discovered today that Ohio is truly all-inclusive with it's mascots.

The University of Akron Zips . . . the mascot being a kangaroo. "Fear the Roo!" as the sports apparel says.

And the Youngstown State University? The Penguins.

I . . . had no idea.

*iz amused*

If there's ever any question as to where I get my fannishness . . .

look no further )

Driving on the outskirts of my hometown, we passed one of those white-on-green "Adopt a Highway" signs. Underneath was a matching white-on-green sign that read:

Ruby and Lucy

Huh-buh-WHA????

Just one more word on last night's ep before I get to my weekly magnum opus:

BUCKEYES!!!!!! \o/

(psst . . . take a close look at the standy on the diner table . . . )

Regardless of your personal thoughts on Sarah Palin or hunting, I thought this was amusing.

Bowhunter Barbie?

This doubly cracks me up because my hometown is only about 20 minutes from Xenia.

(Please note: This is not an invitation to talk politics. As do some of my LJ friends, I find that much political talk--especially this close to an election--isn't so much an exchange of ideas as a means to Prove I'm Correct. My personal thoughts on the matter are personal, and if you get to know me well enough, they should become reasonably obvious, anyway.)

So I've already made mention of Dean's Tape Case. Well, Geo gave away said tape case and tapes, to 16-year-old Nephew. Who was quite pleased, as he is into classic rock. Also, when I showed him my SPN DVDs, to show where I've gotten my current interest, his response? "Hey! I watch that show!" Or rather, he used to. I assume he lost track of it when it changed times/nights/networks. And there's this whole he's-a-teenager-and-has-school-activities thing. "But I like that kind of stuff," he says. "Have you seen Saw? How about 13 Ghosts?" I then proceeded to find the "Thriller" video on YouTube to show him. "By the same director who did An American Werewolf In London," says I. "That's a cool movie," says Nephew16.

But back to Zepplin.

So we go to visit my Little Bro (who is not so much "little" anymore, as he is a good 6'1") and SiL. And Bro answers the door wearing a Zepplin t-shirt. Am I sensing a theme here? Should I be expanding my musical repertoire to include Zepplin? I told him my reactions to the tapes we listened to, that I was expecting something harder, and his response was, "Oh, they've got hard stuff." But yes, there's more to it than that.

I explained to him about the song with the missing 16th note. He said, "There's this song called 'The Ocean'--"

"Yes! That's it! How the heck do you count that thing?"

And he tells me, "It goes from 4/4 to 7/8 to 4/4 to 7/8. I had to look it up to figure it out."

No wonder I was confused.

Guess what!

Last night's ep of Ghost Hunters visited Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn (near Dayton), Ohio.

Where Geo used to work.

He recognized the buildings they investigated, and when they showed the conversations between the Hunters and their tour guide, Geo did a double-take and exclaimed, "Hey! I know her!"

Pretty freaky stuff going on at the AFB. After the last few eps where nothing much has happened, they had to go to Ohio for some real activity. Bwah!

I wonder if they've ever met the woman who writes the "Haunted Ohio" books.

We were both surprised, however, that they didn't investigate the Air Force Museum; that place is supposed to be very haunted as well.

So we're back in Ohio for the weekend. And I spent yesterday on campus and at the PAC visiting with my theater peeps (who are not squishy and covered in brightly colored sugar).

My old stomping grounds )

Tiempo Libre )

AND we even got back in time to catch most of N3. (Will need to watch it uninterrupted when I get back to Virginia.) And then I had a nice long chat with [livejournal.com profile] izhilzha.

It was a good day.

Only in Springfield (Note: The original Yahoo link is dead. Link replaced with current link on 3-19-13.)

There is also a pawn shop (where I used to work for Jeweler Friend) where you can arrange a complete wedding at the shop if you purchase your wedding set there. I've seen pictures of a man proposing to his girlfriend in the showroom.

And we didn't win the premiere of The Simpsons Movie? How does that happen?
