have returned.

Got home from CA this evening. Busy, busy trip.

In brief: Wedding, Hot Fuzz, Disneyland.

I'll write in more detail later, and hopefully tomorrow I'll get my long and rambly done before the LJ maintenance. In short: Show loves me, and I'm loving show.

And Jensen looked really good.

So. Traveled trans-continental non-stop yesterday. Oy!

Had a wonderful time once we got checked into our hotel, though.

The Magic Castle Hotel is a renovated apartment complex build in the 1950s. As a result, our suite is actually a former apartment, complete with kitchenette, modest living/dining area, cute little bathroom, and one bedroom. Perfect for a single person in Hollywood, I'd think.

All the apartments surround a courtyard, the centerpiece of which is the pool, which is open 24/7. (I'm thinking late night swim before we leave.) I can totally see the complex having parties, with everyone's doors open and having a good time.

Went for a dip in the pool yesterday, then got ready for dinner at Yamashiro, up the hill a ways. (The hotel provided free shuttle service.) We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. I discovered a beer that I really like (Pyramid Apricot), and I took the waiter's recommendation and changed my entree order (I ordered the pasta and vegetable dish, he told me how it was totally not as advertised on the menu, and was actually one of only a couple items on the menu that he really didn't like.) I ended up ordering the baby back ribs. Now, the funny thing is--ribs, yams (sweet potatoes), and cornbread is that it's something I could totally get back in Virginia. Heck, it's a Southern staple combination. The difference? The Asian twist to everything. Yes, I ate the ribs with a knife and fork (totally NOT how one eats ribs). They were mighty tasty, and this coming from someone who doesn't eat ribs (because of the whole messy finger food thing). The yams were whipped super-smooth and fluffy. And the cornbread had--get this--a dash of anise in it. As George said, "Why does this remind me of Christmas? Ah! It's anise." And for dessert, I had chocolate souffle cake, and he had a pretty darn amazing ice cream cookie "sandwich."

We then walked down to the farmer's market, but it was dark, and I was tired (jet lag, you know), so we came back to the hotel.

I slept for 8 hours solid for the first time probably since our trip to the Outer Banks two years ago.

Things I miss about vacation:

1. The ocean.

2. Family.

3. I went barefoot almost all week. Only wore sandals or shoes on our various excursions.

4. The built-in exercise. We stayed in a 3-story house in which the kitchen/living room was on the 3rd floor, Geo's and my bedroom was on the 2nd floor, and of course all outdoor activities required going to the 1st floor.

5. Being in an environment where I did not feel pressured to justify the project for which I work to the community in which I work. (While I'm very glad I have a job, the nature of my job has become tedious and frustrating on several levels.) In other words, I could step away from the editorials and on-line disinformation and short-sightedness and rudeness, of which I have been charged with keeping track, that is regularly leveled at the restoration project. So, being totally removed from that was fantastic.

Re: #5 . . . Yes, I'm back at work today. It's not been too bad, but an e-mail exchange on which I was copied reminded me of how closed and short-sighted people can be in my community. It's tiresome.

Vacations are always great for recharging the batteries and possibly getting you to look at your everyday life with slightly fresh eyes. I wish I could keep the relaxation and energy after I get back.

I've got lots of introspective thinky things I might post about. You have been warned.

As I write this, we are packing up the last of everything.

Yesterday (Friday) consisted of shopping in Duck in the morning (including Scarborough Faire and Scarborough Lane), the ocean (and a nap on the beach) in the afternoon (MiL successfully got her jellyfish kite in the air), and cleaning up the house and one last night time dip in the hot tub.

NieceB and Hubby left around 9:30 - 10:00 pm. Geo's Sister1 and fam (including Nephews & NA's GF) left around 2:00 am (at least, that was their plan. I told them goodbye before I went to bed).

It will be good to get back home, but I don't want to leave. This has been great, and I'm going to miss the ocean quite a lot. It's nice to disconnect from everything except what's going on in your immediate environment, to be aware, but not to be stressed. To spend time together with family, who like each other and have fun together.

Geo and I got up early and went out to wade in the ocean one more time. The sunrise was beautiful, with the sun coming up from behind some clouds, the red-pink peeking through and rays rising from behind. Lovely.

Must go help with the final clean-up of the house and shut down the 'puter. Will be back on-line when we're back in Virginia.

Morning at the beach, afternoon relaxing, watching DVDs, reading, napping.

This evening we went to Roanoke Island, had lunch at a wonderful 50's atmospheric restaurant called Big Al's Soda Fountain & Grill. The original owners of the restaurant were also Coca Cola collectors, so there was memorabilia all over the place. Then we went to the Waterside Theatre in Manteo to see the first/oldest/longest running outdoor drama in the country: The Lost Colony. As one might expect, it's a dramatization (including dance and song) of the events surrounding and a possible explanation for the disappearance of the Roanoke Island colony established by Sir Walter Raleigh. The costumes and sets were pretty amazing, and amphitheater is a very nice venue, and the cast was very good. At the end of the play, the story proposes that the remaining colonists (including the first European born in the New World, Virginia Dare) traveled south to Croatoan in hopes of escaping the Spanish armada and surviving other growing hardships. The carving (referenced in the SPN ep) was left on a tree. The colonists were never seen or heard from again.

A few of the actors came out for a meet-and-greet, and I mentioned to a couple of them that the show made me homesick to do outdoor drama again. One young man asked where I'd done such drama before, and I told him in Ohio. "Where?" asked the girl next to him. "Springfield," says I. "The Springfield Summer Arts Festival." She knew exactly what I was talking about. "I'm from Toledo!" says she. "I went to Bowling Green!" says I. She'd never had the opportunity to go to the Arts Festival, but it was a nice little moment meeting someone "from home."

I'm enjoying my Carl Hiaasen book. I'll write about it more when I'm done, but one of the characters reminds me of a 12-year-old Dean, and I think I've picked the character I would want Jensen cast as were it ever made into a movie. Something very different for him--I could even see him wearing his beard in the role. Heh.

Today is Mother and Daddy's 43rd anniversary.

It rained this morning and this evening, but in between was sunny. We (Geo, NephewB, Mother, Daddy, MiL, and I) spent the day shopping at Timbuck II in Corolla. I spent way too much in Corolla Candles, and I so enjoy the pirate-y apparel at Kitty Hawk Kites. We ate lunch in a little pizza shop that must be owned by an Ohioan, given all the Ohio sports team memorabilia displayed on the walls.

SPN S1 (and the fact that I didn't bring a sweater of any kind) has persuaded me of the benefits of the zip-up hoodie. Probably the most useful of the items I've purchased, it's come in very handy this evening.

Geo and I made chili and homemade ice cream for dinner.

We all went kite flying (or tried to) on the beach after dinner, but there was no updraft to take the kites up where the air currents were.

Spent some time working on my crochet, and watching a few con vids.

Right now I'm sitting in bed listening to the surf.

Shell game

The trick to collecting the seashells you want is not finding the shells, it's catching the shells before they get washed back out to sea. And it's not uncommon for me to be so focused on finding a shell, that a wave takes me unawares and wipes me out. It's kind of hilarious.

(Meant to write about this on Sunday.)

Finally!

A day in

Jun. 14th, 2010 06:39 pm
feliciakw: (Corolla sunrise)
Spent most of the day out of the sun today. I'm hoping the burn will be better tomorrow. It's not bad; I just didn't want to subject it to another day of sun.

We all had lunch today at Dirty Dick's Crab House. Their slogan is "I got my crabs at Dirty Dick's." Their mascot, a crab, is named Clappy. Do with that as you will.

But the food was good. I don't really like seafood, but the red beans and rice that I had was tasty.

Fannish goings-on while staying out of the sun )
feliciakw: (Corolla sunrise)
The sun came out, and we went to the beach. Did I mention that we have our own private board walk to the beach? It's fantastic!

NewphewB (who will be 13 next month) and I spent much of the time picking up sea shells. I'm going to take a bunch back to an artist friend who makes jewelry and ask her to do something with them. The purple ones are my favorite.

The sand on our portion of the shore (we're in Duck, NC, this year), shifts very easily, and much of it isn't sand at all, but tiny bits and pieces and shards of seas shells. Ouch. And the waves were coming in fast today; I got wiped out more than once reaching for a shell and not being fast enough.

And the water was COLD today. But as I told everyone, you stay in long enough, you can't feel anything anyway (just be careful of hypothermia, eh?).

I'm a bit red after today's adventure (and I did put on sunscreen), but not nearly as bad as I was last year.

I think I'll sleep well tonight.
feliciakw: (Corolla sunrise)
Our room in the house has an ocean view. I opened the sliding door onto the deck, kept the screen door closed, and went to sleep to the sound of the ocean. For real--not a recording or imitation.

It rained last night. Cloudy and overcast today. I don't think a day at the beach is in store. I've got a Carl Hiaasen book to read, a script to learn, and crochet to keep me busy. (No pictures, as I've already given them, but I gave NieceB and Niece T crochet beach bags for the trip, one on blue variegated and one in orange sherbet variegated.) Also possibly a trip to the grocery, since I don't want to completely free-load off everyone in the house. I want to contribute something to the household and kitchen expenses.

I've also been checking out the con reports and photos coming in from Barcelona. The guys look good. I'm kind of sad to see that Jensen doesn't wear a ring on his right hand anymore, but I'm tickled beyond reason to see the one on his left. And while I think I prefer him clean shaven, the beard he's sporting looks really good, and make him look like . . . himself? . . . if that makes any sense. Like Jensen rather than a character he's played.

Here's hoping for a sunny day on the beach tomorrow.
feliciakw: (Corolla sunrise)
Even as I type this, I'm sitting on the deck in the dusk of the day, enjoying the breeze, listening to the waves crash against the shore, and looking out over the Atlantic.

Plus, janglyjewels gave me a heads-up regarding the Barcelona con, so I've been able to get my J & J con clip fix.

Looking forward to this.

Life is good.

(I miss the kitties, though.)
feliciakw: (Corolla sunrise)
Getting ready to head out for the Outer Banks. Went two years ago and it was FANTASTIC! Looking forward to some ocean time.

I'm anticipating being on-line from time to time, though.
feliciakw: (Corolla sunrise)
Well, as I posted yesterday, we're back in Virginia. It was a great week by the sea.

I think it was probably the most relaxed I've been . . . since the move to Virginia, maybe. I actually got to sit and read a real book. In quiet. In relaxed atmosphere.

I went swimming for the first time in I don't know how many years. The ocean was clean and clear where we were, with minimal critters to be on the lookout for. I got more sun than I've had in years (and it seems to have helped my complexion issues somewhat).

As it turns out, I didn't have to do any cooking. Turns out my in-law family are all into planning great meals, and if you get in the way, they push you out of the kitchen. I felt kind of lazy and non-productive, but what can ya do?

I had some time for some rather thinky thoughts, but those will go in a different post, if I write them up at all.

I spent more time with my nephews than I have in years. (I think Nephew10 and I talked more this week than we have his entire 10-year life.) It was quite a treat.

I went kite flying for the first time in probably decades, literally.

I'm glad to be back with the kitties, but really? I could have stayed longer, if the family had.

Because one of the best things about the week was having 3 generations of Geo's family under one roof. For a week. Sure, the nieces were on their laptops, and the boys were playing video games, and I spent a lot of time by myself reading, but we were all there.

And that's something I really miss.
feliciakw: (Default)
And fairly wiped out.

The drive back was uneventful. And it was a little difficult to leave the family there. If it weren't for some car trouble we had with Geo's car before we left at the beginning of the week, we might have stayed the extra day.
feliciakw: (Corolla sunrise)
This morning, Geo and I set the alarm to get up early enough for a sunrise walk on the beach. I had hoped to see some dolphins. Alas, no such luck, but as I was walking along the beach, I walked on some things I thought were pebbles. When I looked closer, lo, they were not pebbles, but tiny little clams that would suck/squirt themselves back into the sand. Fascinating.

Spent most of the day today at the beach, practicing catching the waves. The sunburn doesn't hurt like it did, but I'm starting to peel.

A nice relaxing day before Geo and I head back tomorrow.
feliciakw: (Default)
Today was a trip to Kitty Hawk to the Wright Brothers Memorial. Very interesting to see where all the work in Dayton finally paid off. Also very interesting to see that the hill where they took off from has moved 450 feet to the southwest from where it stood in 1903. The terrain, of course, was all sand at the time, so yes, it did move. The winds and the sand were why the Wrights chose Kitty Hawk for their flights.

(It was also interesting to hear the people around me reading or explaining to their children that the Wrights were from Dayton, OH.)

We ate lunch at Jimmy's Seafood Buffet. Jimmy's Buffet. Get it? The food wasn't great, but it did have that beach bar ambiance. I didn't realize that Geo's side of the fam was so fond of crab legs. Me, not so much, but I was delighted to see all the veggies on the hot bar.

I finished Shirley Jackson's The Haunting today. I'll post more thoroughly in a different entry, but if anyone has read it (and seen the original movie?), I'd kind of like to discuss it. Geo also mentioned watching the remake, since I've read the book now.

Tonight Newphew16 and I watched "In My Time of Dying."

Cutty-cut for spoilers, just in case )
feliciakw: (Default)
Tonight after dinner we all went kite flying on the beach. Geo and I purchased inexpensive kites when we were out and about today (we went to see the Carrituck Beach Lighthouse. We climbed to the top, and on about the third landing, I remembered that I'm afraid of heights). I used to be pretty good at flying kites (it's been years--perhaps even decades--since I've been), and I'm still not too bad. My kite went right up, and I was able to bring it back down without incident.

Geo and I also walked a ways along the shore. The moon was big and orange tonight.

Nephew16 and I watched the S1 finale eps of SPN. At the very end, he said, "Well, you didn't see that coming." He's very low key about the whole thing, but I noticed him chuckling at Dean a couple of times.
feliciakw: (Lean on Me)
I spent much of the day inside today, due to being in some pain from my burn. Late this afternoon, Nephew16 and I got a chance to watch some SPN. We watched the pilot, "Hell House," and "Dead Man's Blood."

I think he got a kick out of "Hell House," and I was particularly amused by one comment he made. It was just as Dean discovers that Sam put super glue on the beer bottle. Nephew16 chuckles and says, "Ah, brotherly love." "You speak from experience?" I ask. "Yeah," he replies with another chuckle.

He also asked me how much the season cost, so I'm thinking I've got his Christmas present taken care of. Heh.
