Thrifting and Pit

Yesterday was a mélange of activities.
Woke up to the news that the Big Butter Jesus on I-75 in SW Ohio burnt to the ground on Monday night. It made national, even international (I saw a link to an article in The Guardian) news. The Huffington Post even had video. The Dayton Daily News carried the most information, since Dayton is more local.
It was a kitchy landmark, something everyone got a kick out of. But to be honest? As church decor, I always looked askance at it. It was just . . . too ostentatious. I guess to me it seemed more tacky than inspiring, though that's not to say that someone somewhere along the line wasn't inspired by it. There are local rumors about how that particular congregation was founded, but I don't know anything about the facts other than what I've read in the news.
But really, I'm not sure why anyone is surprised. That's what happens when you build a 6-story lightening rod and encase it in flammable materials. I'm surprised it's stood this long (6 years).
Driving to lunch on Monday, we passed several thrift shops. Geo loves thrift shops, so yesterday, we hopped in the car and headed out to go thrifting. I didn't mind it yesterday, because I actually had something in mind to look for. Sadly, I didn't find it. But Geo bought several LDs and a book.
We also went to a store called Knitting Addiction, where I bought three carved crochet hooks made out of California birch.
Had lunch at a little Italian restaurant.
When we got back, I put on my swimsuit and went down to the shore. The water was much warmer than it had been on Monday.
After dinner, NieceB & Hubby, NephewA & GF, NephewB, Geo & I had a rousing game of PIt. For those who don't know, Pit is a card game based on the US stock exchange. The goal is to corner the market on a commodity, or acquire all 9 cards of a given suit. You do this by trading a given number of cards with other players. This gets very loud and very wild because everyone is trading at the same time, and trying to find someone to trade their 1, 2, 3, or 4 cards with. A miniature stock exchange ensues until someone corners the market, slams down their cards, and hollers PIT! Each suit is worth a differing amount of point; the first one to 500 points wins. But be careful of the Bull card and the Bear card, as they can cost you points if you don't win the hand.
We played one hand silent, which is hilarious because it's so hard not to say anything during this game. It becomes a game of pounding the table to get attention, waving your hand in front of people's faces, and from time to time even . . . um . . . tapping them firmly if the person you want to trade with doesn't see you. I thought my face was gonna break it was so funny!
In the end, I won the game, which is a feat considering I'm not very good at games.

Date: 2010-06-16 02:19 pm (UTC)"Big Butter Jesus" and "Touchdown Jesus" are reminding me of Kubrick and his Jesus paraphernalia. I'm sure he would have had some serious appreciation for the Butter Jesus.
Sounds like your vacation is going well! A little bit of this, a little bit of that. And very relaxing!

Date: 2010-06-16 02:43 pm (UTC)The "real" Touchdown Jesus--the mural that's painted on the football stadium at Notre Dame--makes sense. It's a Catholic school, and the pictures of it I've seen are kinda pretty. But the one in front of the SW Ohio mega-church . . . not so much.
Best picture of it that I've seen, though is this one (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_WcOS_h-hD9g/RfjFs6PGZuI/AAAAAAAAALc/T5s24rC-AwE/s1600/ohio_jesus.jpg). That's something OSU college guys do when they travel, where they find someone or something strange to be one of the letters. It cracks me up.
Vacation is going swimmingly. It's rainy today, so we're off to look for some good shopping.
