And fairly wiped out.

The drive back was uneventful. And it was a little difficult to leave the family there. If it weren't for some car trouble we had with Geo's car before we left at the beginning of the week, we might have stayed the extra day.

This morning, Geo and I set the alarm to get up early enough for a sunrise walk on the beach. I had hoped to see some dolphins. Alas, no such luck, but as I was walking along the beach, I walked on some things I thought were pebbles. When I looked closer, lo, they were not pebbles, but tiny little clams that would suck/squirt themselves back into the sand. Fascinating.

Spent most of the day today at the beach, practicing catching the waves. The sunburn doesn't hurt like it did, but I'm starting to peel.

A nice relaxing day before Geo and I head back tomorrow.

Today was a trip to Kitty Hawk to the Wright Brothers Memorial. Very interesting to see where all the work in Dayton finally paid off. Also very interesting to see that the hill where they took off from has moved 450 feet to the southwest from where it stood in 1903. The terrain, of course, was all sand at the time, so yes, it did move. The winds and the sand were why the Wrights chose Kitty Hawk for their flights.

(It was also interesting to hear the people around me reading or explaining to their children that the Wrights were from Dayton, OH.)

We ate lunch at Jimmy's Seafood Buffet. Jimmy's Buffet. Get it? The food wasn't great, but it did have that beach bar ambiance. I didn't realize that Geo's side of the fam was so fond of crab legs. Me, not so much, but I was delighted to see all the veggies on the hot bar.

I finished Shirley Jackson's The Haunting today. I'll post more thoroughly in a different entry, but if anyone has read it (and seen the original movie?), I'd kind of like to discuss it. Geo also mentioned watching the remake, since I've read the book now.

Tonight Newphew16 and I watched "In My Time of Dying."

Cutty-cut for spoilers, just in case )

Tonight after dinner we all went kite flying on the beach. Geo and I purchased inexpensive kites when we were out and about today (we went to see the Carrituck Beach Lighthouse. We climbed to the top, and on about the third landing, I remembered that I'm afraid of heights). I used to be pretty good at flying kites (it's been years--perhaps even decades--since I've been), and I'm still not too bad. My kite went right up, and I was able to bring it back down without incident.

Geo and I also walked a ways along the shore. The moon was big and orange tonight.

Nephew16 and I watched the S1 finale eps of SPN. At the very end, he said, "Well, you didn't see that coming." He's very low key about the whole thing, but I noticed him chuckling at Dean a couple of times.

Last night we went for a walk on the beach at dusk and watched the moon come up. "Moonlit walk on the beach," and all that.

I love the surf. I love the water as it crests to a wave and breaks into white foam and rolls up onto the sand. I love the sound, and the color of the waves, and it's instinct for me to head toward the water, and it actually takes a bit of effort not to dive into the waves.

Crabs are hilarious little creatures. They were all over the place on the beach, and the little ones move really, really fast. They're also very non-aggressive. Given the choice, they'll retreat or hide; they won't attack.

Spent the first day in I have no idea how long in the water today. Not just any water--the Atlantic Ocean. It's been ages since I've been in the Atlantic. (I always try to step into the Pacific when I'm out in L.A.) And only one jellyfish to be seen!

The kids thought the water tasted yucky. "It's salt water," I told them. (I actually didn't think it was that bad. It just stung a bit when it got in my eyes.) And it felt really good. Not really cold at all. We had great fun in the waves and foam. But we are now all varying shades ranging from red to very, VERY red. I'm on the "very red" end of the spectrum.

And as a side note: If you use the spray-on sunscreen, be sure to rub it in. Otherwise, you'll get a really strange, mottled pattern of sunburn.

I made the comment several times that we should watch Jaws. No one seemed to appreciate the suggestion.

Well, we made it to the vacation house in Corolla, NC. I thought we were going to run out of land and end up in the ocean before we found it. It's quite lovely, and I'm planning on hitting the hot tub tonight. With the entire in-law clan under one roof, it's going to feel like . . . well, it will be entertaining, that's for sure. :-)

I did end up bringing both S1 and S2 of SPN. Nephew16 is rather jazzed about that. He said he would probably want to watch all of them. "A boy after my own heart," said I.

Seriously, though, I've got my Shirley Jackson books, and some health-type books, and kalquessa's fic to beta, so I've got plenty to do besides watch SPN.

And just for the record, my MiL is most awesome. She's paying for the house, and she's supplying all the household-type stuff we need. I kept asking what I needed to bring, and she kept saying, "Just your personal stuff." "Do I need to bring paper towels, or tissues, or what kind of food . . .?" "I've got all that stuff," says she.

Excellent.
