How is it that Jensen can sneak up on me when I totally know he's going to be there?

Geo and I watched MBV this weekend. (We did a double feature of Drag Me to Hell and MBV. Won't be doing that anymore if a wee one joins us.) I actually spent a good deal of the movie crocheting, only putting my needlework down when Jensen was on the screen (or scenes where I knew he was going to appear). 'Cause, you know. That's the way it works. Anyway . . .

Reveal scene. Obviously, Jensen is in this scene, so I'm watching it, right? And I'm sitting on the end of the couch farthest away from the speaker through which Jensen/Tom's off-screen line is channeled.

You know what?

I still jumped.

*facepalm*

Also, this movie plays so much better in movie theater 3D. (I won't watch it on home 3D because the color correction is screwy.) There was some pretty fun gimmicky 3D, but really? The things that used the 3D to show depth (rather than pop things out of the screen at you) were fairly amazing. Some of the best live-action 3D I've seen since the craze reemerged. Yes, this cheesy horror flick has one of my very favorite 3D shots in ever--the establishing aerial shot of the mine. I was amazed. I think I even leaned over to Geo and whispered, "Now they're just showing off."

Also-also, here be spoilers )

The surround sound on the MBV disc is excellent. I'm sitting on the couch, watching the beginning of the reveal scene, and Jensen actually snuck up behind me and startled me when he started talking right by my right shoulder--or more specifically, his off-screen line was channeled to the speaker positioned about a yard away from my right shoulder.

Two thumbs up, sound engineers.

So yesterday I finally broke down and bought the Blu-ray 3D DVD release of MBV. Took a look at it last night.

The 3D is done in the old school style with the red and green lenses. And the 3D actually looks pretty good. The problem with the R&G format is that it kinda screws up the colors, and you can see a sort of outline around all the figures. But the animated stuff? Like the news headlines at the beginning? Very cool.

And I'm actually kind of impressed at how good it looks in 2D. We took a look at the 2D version (only the opening scene), and it didn't look gimmicky at all. So that was great.

The movie still squicks me out, but Jensen is a very good-looking guy, so, you know. I'll live with it.

Last night we watched Geo's new DVD of the original Canadian 1980 My Bloody Valentine.

Not great, but not bad. Potential spoilers ahead. )

Anyway, an interesting little entry into the '80s slasher genre. And the remake, I think, paid adequate homage while updating and playing up on the 3D technology.

Off to see Watchmen this afternoon.

Here's what's doing for those who are interested:

MBV placed 3rd in the box office ratings its opening weekend. It dropped to 6th, then to 9th, then to 16th, and has held onto 16th place for a second week in a row. In other words, it's been in the top 20 since it opened.

It had a budget of approximately $15 million, and has, to date, made $50,861,000. Rule of thumb is that a movie must make back 3X its original cost to be considered successful. They are 5 million above that mark, so it's definitely considered a successful movie. Wheels are probably already turning for a sequel.

F13 placed at the top of the box office this weekend. It had a budget of $19 million, and it brought in $42,245,000. It is well on its way to reaching the 3X mark. Not surprising, considering the built-in following of the franchise.

And thank you so much, Boys, for making me interested in box office placement again. *eyeroll* [/sarcasm]

I'm continually impressed that whenever I read about or hear something about Jensen from people who actually know him or who have actually worked with him, I have never heard or read anything negative. Now, granted, I'm relatively new to the whole Jensen love thing; I've not been following his career since his days as a wee babe on DoOL or anything. But it's been my experience that anything negative I read has been speculation (or upon occasion, dare I say meanness?) on the part of fans. It's also been my observation that if a fellow industry individual feels negatively toward someone, the best they will do is say nothing. My limited observation tells me that industry people do not go out of their way to say something vastly complimentary about someone unless they mean it. And certainly not to go above and beyond by commenting on how genuinely nice a person is.

This is my observation, and I'm continually tickled to read things like the following (the full interview can be found here):

(Quote by Todd Farmer, screenwriter of MBV 3D, bold text mine)

I remember calling Patrick after I first saw Kerr’s tape. It’s hard to explain. You’re sitting there watching tape after tape after tape and suddenly it clicks. Kerr clicked. Then Jensen was cast and it was simply perfect. First time I saw those two on screen together I was riveted. And I when you saw them on set you got the sense that they genuinely dug the characters and wanted the movie to rock. I recall Jensen telling Kerr, “You know, when I say this, you should say this…” And now it’s one of Kerr’s best lines in the movie. And I didn’t write it. Jensen came up with it and handed it off to his comrade. That’s a level of professionalism in a dog-eat-dog-jealous world that you just don’t find.

Jensen played the role better than I’d written it. So, that said, he was crucial. His choices made it a better movie. It’s to a point now that I can’t imagine anyone else in the role. Being a great actor should be enough. But no. He’s got to be infuriatingly good looking as well. With that deep milk chocolate voice. He’d be amazingly easy to hate if he wasn’t such great guy.

We had a scene together. Not an easy scene by the way. Not for anyone involved. And while I did shine as Fredrick in The Pirates Of Penzance, this was only my second film. But Jensen was… well… he was simply cool.

It pleases me greatly to read that Jensen isn't just a pretty face or an amazingly talented actor, but that he's also a good person.

So, yesterday. Friday. My usual day off, and Geo's every-other-Friday Friday off.

What made me happy? Having a husband who not only tolerates but is willing to enable my thespic infatuations. We went to see MBV 3D again yesterday.

In a corollary:

Dear Jensen Ackles:

You, Sir, have accomplished something that no actor in the history of ever has managed to accomplished, to wit:

You have successfully drawn me to the theater to see a slasher flick. You managed this feat not once, but twice, technically within a one-week span of time.

Good show, Sir! Well played indeed.

Yours in thespic infatuation,
Felicia K. W.

[livejournal.com profile] kimmer1227 pointed me in the direction of www.dreadcentral.com the other day, where you will find four interviews with people involved with the making of MBV 3D. Three of the interviews are with performers; one is with the director.

There are no interviews with Jensen, but he is mentioned quite prominently in the interview with the director, Patrick Lussier. (Jensen was considered very early on for the role, but things originally were not going to work out. Then as the start date for the movie got pushed back, and the production pursued Jensen again, as the shooting conflicts with SPN were no longer an issue.) Jared is also mentioned in the interview.

Belatedly cut for spoilers. Sorry. )

The information is pretty much what we've heard already, but check out Jensen's enthusiasm over the prospect of 3D sports broadcasts.

Oh, Jensen. You're adorable.

Dudes. Duuuuuuuudes. I . . . um . . . where do I start?

Well, I guess I'll start with a warning: I WILL be discussing the Big Reveal, so if you don't want to be spoiled, do not pass the clicky-click.

Spoilers, ho! )

As soon as I was out of the theater, I called [livejournal.com profile] izhilzha and told her that she and [livejournal.com profile] kalquessa had to go see the movie today. Because I want to talk about it, and I canNOT do that without spoiling.

You know, I hadn't gone into this thinking that I'd need to see it more than once. And we'll no doubt get it on DVD. But I'm thinking that I'll need to see it at least one more time in 3D before it leaves the theaters.

And now Geo wants to check out the original to see how it compares.

In short, a great fun time this afternoon. And Jensen on the big screen--and in 3D--FTW!
