This, I'm sure, is of interest to all of us who are involved in fan activities. When do fan activities cross the line into actual, suable copyright infringement? This might answer that question . . .

Rowling wins lawsuit against fan.

I understand, I think, why the judge ruled the way he did. The fan site is not for profit; a book would be. Copyright is a gray area anyway, and when you factor in Fair Usage, it gets even more so. I wonder if this case will be cited a precedent in the future.

I’ve been threatening to do this for a long time, and every time I’m presented with new evidence, the thought occurs to me again. Once upon a time, [livejournal.com profile] izhilzha posed the question, Have either of the Winchester boys ever read Harry Potter? This question was posed long before I started watching the show, so I really had no idea what was going on with SPN, other than it was about a couple of brothers who hunted ghosts . . . or something. I might not even have known that much.

But as I became acquainted with the first season of the show, I told her, of course they've read it (or at least seen the movies, as might be the case with Dean), and Dean tells Sam, "Dude! You're totally Harry Potter."

Warning to [livejournal.com profile] kalquessa: There are some spoilery things behind the cut. Proceed with caution.

So here it is: my running list of reasons why Sam Winchester is, in fact, Harry Potter )

Fandom and copyright are always a convoluted mix.

Does this cross a line?

Here there be (minor) spoilers )

Um, wow.

Just finished HP7 tonight. Then I had to pull together a meal for some of Geo's work compatriots. So I didn't get to post while I was still on my high.

But wow. That was one wild ride.

So much has already been said about it, my favorite points already pointed out by others. There's just so much to love about this book. And most of the moments I love are character moments.

My mindset going in )

And I should probably get to bed now.

Having blown through the book in five days, I might have to re-read it soon.

Good stuff.

Just peeking in on my friends list--reading NOTHING--because you all should be beaten with wet noodles for being able to read so quickly.

I'm a slow reader, speedwise. I always have been. I don't skim. I don't scan. I read. Every freakin' word. And then I go back and re-read. I like to savor. I love to savor the feel of the book in my hand (especially at the point where I am now, where the book is balanced, with equal page weight on either cover), the feel of the pages as I turn them, the texture of the dust jacket. I love the look of the words on the page, and Mary GranPre's illustrations. I marvel at the complexity of the human brain to be able to form meaning out of ink on a page, and to be able to make the ink form pictures in the mind. This is why it can take me so long to read. I get sidetracked by the experience of the reading.

And when I want to completely immerse myself in a book, I need solitude. Can't have the TV on in the background, can't have conversation going on in the room. Because the more I want to focus and lose myself, the more easily distracted I become. And when that happens at a particularly poignant time in the book, the effect is lost. So, anyway . . .

I know someone back in Ohio who is on her 3rd re-through. That's just nuts.

People who know me know I'm "whipping through" the book. I anticipate that, since I'm home alone today, I might finish the book today or tomorrow.

It's a fun read. Heart-clutching moments here, moments of relieved smiles there. For those who have already read the thing )

But I'm going to go have breakfast now. Then it's shower, dress, and sit down with the book. Then maybe at some point I'll get to organizing the kitchen today. Because I actually do have stuff I need to get done.

Here's the deal. I'm not reading anything about HP except the books themselves (finished a re-read of HBP yesterday). No articles on the book, no spoilers, no essays, no nuthin'. I want to come at HP7 as fresh and unspoiled as I possibly can. That said, I do indeed have my own thoughts--unsophisticated though they might be--on the book.

Snape-y thoughts )

Those are my rambly thoughts. YMMV.

Hey, gang, I need some help. Can y'all point me in the right direction to find the quote by Mr. Weasley: "Never trust anything that can think for itself if you don't know where it keeps it's brain"?

I'm 99.9% sure it's in CoS, but I don't know whereabouts in the book. I think I can find the quote by Dumbledore about choices more than anything determine your destiny. And the "I knew Harry Potter was great, but I did not know he was good" speech by Dobby is in . . . wow . . . which one does Dobby show up in first? Is that CoS also? Yes, it is. Because that's the one Dobby tries to save Harry and Harry ends up losing the bones in his right arm.

Hm . . . maybe that's why I like that book so much--there's so much good stuff in it.

On a slightly different note, I finished up OotP last night. What Luna tells Harry about "beyond the veil" so reminds me of a passage I've come to call "The Next Room." I'll post it if anyone is interested.

In the meantime, I have to get ready for work.

Geo and I are now land barons. We own two houses, one in Ohio and one in Virginia. (Weird that when I was in high school, this is what I said I wanted . . . I was a silly girl.)

Geo says the closing went flawlessly, and that our rate is excellent (we locked in when we applied, so that was great), and our house payment is better than we expected. The title company said we did the financing the absolute best way possible. (I guess I spent those years in mortgage lending for a reason.) And we don't owe a payment in June. The seller wasn't there, apparently. But she apparently is very happy we're getting her house, and she's left us a note on how to take care of what and things she's discovered made taking care of the house easier.

We'll need to shop for a new washer and dryer, but that can be kind of fun.

I'm going with the folks to take Geo some furniture next week. It will be nice to see the new yard in full bloom.

ETA: I have pre-ordered HP7, with a shipping address of Culpeper, Va. That's just . . . weird.
