So, I have my laptop back, and I have a Friday off. Which means that if I can focus, I can get the highlights of my review done.

Because of the holiday and my attention being focused elsewhere, I'm going to try to keep this fairly short and just hit the highlights.

Hola.

I've noticed that my past couple of reviews have had some really weird word usage in them. This is because TextEdit automatically corrects stuff to real words (it changes "ick" to "ice," for example) when I'm not looking. I'll try to keep better track.

The more I think about it, the more I really like this week's ep as a whole. Still not overly keen on the Becky storyline, or sending her off the deep end the way they did, but overall there were delightful moments and nods and stuff to really enjoy from a "sit back and enjoy" point of view.

I love this episode so very much. Like pumpkin pie. A good old-fashioned ghost hunt. Likable guest characters. A cameo "appearance" by an old friend. And perhaps most importantly the brothers hashing it out and character growth.

Also, while I get that the show is "dark"--meaning shot dark, dark lighting--I really do like when we've got some light and color going, because dang but Jensen looks good in sunlight. Just saying'.

So, yeah. My favorite part was everything. It's just a matter of degree of favorite.

(Well, okay, I'm not particularly keen on the whole mass murder serial killing aspect. That's why I've never seen Pulp Fiction or Natural Born Killers and why some eps of my crime dramas give me the heebie-jeebies. But I kinda love the way J&J played it. I'll get into that later.

Better late than never, right? Life and timing seem to be thwarting my ability to do my long commentaries.

Also, this ep is one of the lighter, self-explanatory eps. So there might be less play-by-play in this commentary.

First, allow me to give you a heads-up. There's a very good chance that this will feel confused and patchwork. I'm at my mom and dad's this week, as my dad is still having some problems, and I've not had a chance to actually sit down and give it my concentration. I've been doing it piecemeal, when I have a few minutes here and there, and though I've tried to at least break it into acts, I've only met with a modicum of success in that regard as well.

This episode was actually pretty straight forward on the character work for me. Nothing too surprising, though probably laying or building on the groundwork for later developments. In fact, some nice truths that we the audience are aware of but that Dean really needs to get a clue about came to the surface.

ExpandI get curious, on occasion. )

We've only got a couple days before the new ep, so I thought I'd get this posted while it's still somewhat relevant to where we are in the season.

I've been seeing a lot of discussion on the interwebz, discussion both villifying Dean for his actions, as well as taking up for Dean. The extremes to which these arguments have gone make me somewhat uncomfortable. And I've seen the word "absolutely" used in at least one instance. "Dean was absolutely right to do what he did." I'm sure someone has made the converse argument: "Dean was absolutely wrong to do what he did."

Oh so much to love in this ep. Not the least of which are the guest stars (Jewel Staite! \o/ Colin Ford! \o/) and the director (What's-His-Name! \o/)

Also, moral ambiguity! :-O \o/

No time to lose. Let's get to it!

So. Much. Edge-of-my-seat goodness in this one. This long & rambly will be full of unadulterated squee. Seriously. I really hope you enjoyed it as much as I did, because it makes me eager to turn on the next ep immediately.

"Fresh Blood."

Written by Sera Gamble.

Directed by Kim Manners.

It has two of the best brother scenes in the entire series.

Even the Gordon-Kubrick scene has a particular poignancy.

Gamble and Manners: a winning combination.

(Well, Manners and anybody is pretty much a winning combination.)

I watched Bugs today.

This time around, I am struck by Dean's line, something to the effect of "Manicured lawns, 'Honey, I'm home.' I'd blow my brains out." This, of course, immediately brought to mind the opening of S6, as well as the recurring references to Dean's secret dream that he'd drop hints about previously throughout the series.

Even as early as "Skin," previous to this comment in "Bugs," the 'shifter, downloading Dean's thoughts, mentioned that Dean had dreams of his own. At the end of S1, Dean mentions having wanted to be a firefighter when he was little. John says he wants Dean to have a home.

I can't help but think that this line about Dean's aversion to "normalcy" . . . He's trying to convince himself as much as anyone. Heck, maybe he even believes it at the time. He probably does. But over the course of the series, he's acknowledged or admitted that part of him, deep down, wants a home and a family. Even if he doesn't think he can have it, even if he's resigned himself to not having it and has thrown himself back into hunting, it's there, it's part of him, and it has been since the beginning of the series.

Oh, Dean.

Also, as I was driving home from work today, I was listening to my S1/S2 mix CD that I created a long while back, and I was thinking about the music they used for the opening of S6. And you know? It occurred to me that even with its ups and downs, I really rather like S6 for what it is. It doesn't have the same feel that the show did in early seasons, but I didn't really expect it to. The characters have been through too much. But taken on its own merit, I like it. It had its flaws, to be sure, but overall, it kept me entertained.

So there ya go.

Well, here we are. My final long and rambly of the season. It seems like forever since the ep aired. I hope I can get back in the swing and remember what I wanted to say.

It's been an interesting season, though I have the sense that a lot of the fandom didn't like it. I thought it tried to explore some interesting things, with varying degrees of success. There was much that they could have explored, but didn't, or could have developed more fully, but didn't. Otoh, the season had several episodes that I very much enjoyed, either for their humor or the "I can't believe they did that" factor or character development or whatever. Even ones I didn't like at all initially came to grow on me and become very well-liked.

Alas, when I go forum-seeking, there's so much negativity where I saw something positive and enjoyable, or at least watchable. (I won't go near the more volatile forums, but even in the milder ones, the negativity seems to outweigh the positivity. Yes, that's a word. I looked it up.)

Anyhoo . . .

Finally. A day to sit down and do my long and rambly. It's been kind of an exhausting week. Between assimilating the ep itself, and reading about fandom freaking out and fretting and hand-wringing over things that haven't even been written yet . . . Oh, Fandom. Why you give me such agita?

There's much to talk about in this ep. So grab yourself some of your favorite beverage and have a seat. This might take a while.

ExpandI have nothing clever to say, so I'll just point out that Jensen rocked this episode. )
feliciakw: (Dean)
Finally. At long last, my long and rambly of last week's ep.

There's much to say, but I feel like I've already said most of it. Bear with me if I repeat myself.
