I've been wanting and meaning to write up some thoughts that have occurred to me regarding Show over the past couple of days. The problem is, when the thoughts are clear and enumerated in my head, I'm too busy stop and write them, and when I have the time to write them, they're back to being muddled.

But I'll give it a try anyway.

First, I was thinking about how this season is different from the previous arc, in that it's entirely from Dean's POV. I realize they've got sort of a mystery going, and Dean is essentially the detective who has to figure it out. But I think it's kind of interesting that thus far, the entire season has been from Dean's POV. As a result, I guess I'm seeing this season as Dean's story.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] izhilzha made an observation regarding the pattern of the storytelling:

Season One: find Dad.
Season Two: save (or stop) Sam
Season Three: find a way to break Dean's deal
Season Four: save (or stop) Sam
Season Five: find a way to stop the apocalypse
Season Six: ...save Sam?

It seems to me that Izhi is correct, and the season is indeed on track for a save Sam season. However, seeing it laid out like that makes me want a save Dean season. We sort of had one, S3, where saving Dean was the objective, but they FAILED. Dean died! Dean went to Hell! So, yes, we need a successful save Dean season.

However, if they'd have to make Dean evil (or "evil," as Sam isn't actually evil right now) to accomplish the storyline, that's . . . not something I want, thanks.

And lastly (I think), I wrote a bit (quite a bit) about Gwen and Dean in my review/commentary. I noticed something else that I didn't mention when I was writing. When Dean tells the group to split up and clear the building looking for the alpha vamp, My Two Sams and Christian split into a team, and Dean and Gwen pair off as a team. The more I think about it, the more I like the dynamic I saw starting between Dean and Gwen. I've said from time to time that I kind of wish Adam had been a sister, because we know how Sam and Dean relate to having a brother, but we don't know how either of them would relate to having a sister. Maybe Gwen will be that sister character? That might be kind of cool.

I think that's it. I'm still adjusting to the time change, and my body is ready to go to bed now.

Geo and I are getting ready to celebrate our 15th anniversary on Thursday. We'll be spending the evening with the Family--the Addams Family, of course--at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. We are so looking forward to it.

Looking at that pattern, I don't think any of those goals were reached in what you could call a successful manner. Sure, they found John, but I wouldn't call it a victory. Oh, boys. *pets dead John*

I'm loving this Dean POV. I've got a project in mind, but like you, "meaning to" doesn't equal "make it so". One day!

Oh, I don't know . . .

S1 . . . Find Dad. Dad found them. Then they found Dad. Check.

S2 . . . Kill the YED. Check. (With added bonus of bringing Sam back from the dead.)

S3 . . . Break Dean's deal, save Dean from Hell. Fail.

S4 . . . Save/stop Sam from using demon powers. Fail.

S5 . . . Avert the Apocalypse. Check.

Not saying that any of these happened in a particularly happy way, but in three out of the five, the goal they originally set out to attain was reached.

Of course, I one is looking for a save Dean season with a check next to it . . . Dean gets saved periodically throughout the seasons. Faith, IMToD, WIaWSNB . . . That kind of thing.

And yes, I'm loving Dean's POV this season. Otoh, part of me wants to see something from Sam's POV, just so I can get a little better handle on what's going on in that noggin of his. Ot3h (I'm borrowing), getting what's going on with Sam from Dean's POV is satisfactory at this point. *nods*

I kind of wish Adam had been a sister

I kinda wish the Show would remember Adam exists at all - LOL! Poor Adam. According to the Winchester Gospels: "And lo, John Winchester did set upon the Land of Minnisota. And he did there mate with a comely maiden who there upon 9 months later did bring forth... a conveinent plot device... ;-P"

Poor Poor Adam! But I think they did have something of a little sister in Jo- even though she had romantic leanings towards Dean. I have a feeling they would have treated a long lost sister in much the same way as Jo and she would have spent much energy constantly trying to prove herself. Eventually, she would have come into her own, like Jo. But I wouldn't put it past the Show to still kill her off sister or not. And heck, who knows, maybe they DO have a sister out there.

Gwen? She's already come into her own. My only issues with her right now is how she's falling in line with Grandpa even after she KNOWS he's working for a demon. She is quite a lot like Dean in that respect. It took him a long time to stand up to John and not automatically follow his every order without question. Eventually he did grow to question John's ways of doing things and call B.S. on him when it was warrented. In many ways he's still struggling with the legacy John left for him- wondering what it means to be a father or a family man in a hunter's world.

Gwen's still early Season One Dean, hardwired to follow the old man's orders even when she doesn't like them or thinks he may be making a mistake. I'm kind of hoping with Dean's influence she'll make some decisions on her own and side with the boys more.... or else she'll be monster chow. I didn't hold out much hope for any of the Campbell Cousins the instant they were introduced. She's the last Cous standing.

I'd like to think she will be the one to swoop in at a key moment and save the day by directly disobeying Grandpa's orders... but then I bet you anything she'll wind up monster chow. This Show hasn't given me much reason to feel very optimistic towards their female characters.

And to your last point- yeah, I hope we get some of Sam's POV later down the line. This field he keeps mentioning waking up in- Can we flashback to that? It seems significant. The cage? Are we going to get to see it? (And will Adam be there- or will he really have been forgotten all together... poor little ghoul eaten plot device *sniff*)

And heck, I want to see Cas's POV too. What's this Civil War in Heaven like... and when it's over... will there be reenactments?

Ironically, to get Sam and Cas's POV, we don't even have to leave Dean's. Dean's gotten the "Come Dean Winchester! Let me show you something!" treatment before. I wouldn't put it past them to show us what's going on with Sam or Cas by giving Dean a window to peek into their world.

Yes, I was delighted when Jo started taking on an annoying little sister vibe rather than love interest for Dean vibe. She's the closest thing we've had to a sister, but I'd still like to see how the boys would react to having an actual related sister. Does that make sense?

Yes, Gwen is a solid hunter, but working out that family vibe could still be interesting.

And yeah, it would be nice of Adam would get a mention here or there. Though I suppose it could be posed that when Michael said, "Adam isn't home right now," that could have meant that he'd sent Adam on to Heaven and just taken over the vessel. Yes, I'm trying to be optimistic.

Oh, I totally get why we're not getting Sam's (or Cas's) POV, and I appreciate the consistency for the mystery. And you're absolutely right that we can get their POV from Dean's observations. It'll be interesting to see how things continue to play out.

I apologize if this reply seems scattered. I'm in NYC right now, trying to get stuff caught up on before retiring for the evening.

Vaguely OT--has Castiel said yet whether Jimmy is still in the vessel? Because, uh, I may be mixing my fanfic reading with canon again, although I do try to keep those straight. :)

I do not believe Cas has said anything one way or t'other about whether Jimmy is still in there. I'd be kinda silly, imo, to keep bringing Jimmy back each time Cas casplodes and then gets reconstituted. But we have nothing in Show to indicate one way or t'other.
