What can I say about "Home"? I mean, really. Back before Kripke went a little (or a lot) wonky with the mytharc. This is a choice piece of . . . lots of stuff.

We get Sam telling Dean for the first time that his nightmares sometimes come true, and that they have to go back to their old house. And we have Dean trying not to freak out accordingly.

We have Dean as the only witness to what happened, and he was only four at the time, and didn't actually see what happened.

Sam learns that it was Dean who carried him out of the fire. Dean calls and leaves a heart wrenching message for John to please come help.

Also? We have Missouri. Her interplay with Dean is highly amusing, but in retrospect, it hurts just a little bit. But you know? After thinking about it, it's exactly right, I think. Missouri is gentle with Sam and with Jenny (I think the mom's name is), because they'll accept it. But with Dean she's tart and firm and snarky. Because really, would Dean have accepted "gentle" as graciously as Sam? Particularly from a woman he doesn't remember, perhaps never even met? I . . . don't think so. (Btw, for all we know, she knows what the boys looked like as kids from photos John showed her at the time, or from photos displayed around the house when she came to investigate the fire. Nothing says she actually met them). Besides, pouty Dean is amusing.

But in spite of the snark and scoffing of the EMF reader and the "He means well. He's just not the sharpest tool in the shed" and "Dean will clean this up," Dean is the one who helps her down the steps when they leave the house, and when Missouri says, "Don't you boys be strangers," she's looking at (addressing) Dean.

Also also? When she tells Sam, "I know I'm supposed to have all the answers, but I don't know" or whatever the exact line is, Geo is convinced that's Kripke speaking though the character. I tend to agree. Heh.

Also x3? This ep hits two of my freak factor buttons. 1) I still, to this day, cannot watch the scene with the repair guy putting his arm in the garbage disposal, and what I can watch of it, I start cringing and flailing and hiding as soon as he reaches the sink in the kitchen. 2) The little boy trapped in the refrigerator. Anyone trapped in an airtight box, or trapped in a box they can't get out of is an issue with me. *sits cringing even as I write this* So, yeah.

So here we go: the ep that takes us into the mytharc where we are now: Mary tells Sam, "I'm sorry." Sam comes clean about the big secret he wouldn't tell Dean in "Bloody Mary." AND John makes an appearance, hinting that he knows something, but he's not sure what.

Lots of chewy stuff here.

I WANT MISSOURI TO COME BACK!!! And tell Dean off for thinking about putting his feet on her table some more! \o/

I totally cannot deal with the garbage disposal or the refrigerator. *shudder*

I was so pleased that they came back and used Mary's "I'm sorry" and gave it context later. That's good sequential storytelling, if you ask me.

Well, if Missouri did tell Dean off now, she'd better let him see the twinkle in her eye after she threatens him with a spoon. Cocky self-confident Dean is a whole lot different the cocky, been-to-Hell-and-I'm-not-lettin'-anyone-get-close-or-get-killed Dean. Then she can bake him pie.

Yes, I rather wish Kripke would focus on the part of the mytharc that makes sense rather than throwing angel juice at us. (Though honestly? We're getting as much of a mocking good time out of the angel juice as we get out of insta-morning. So there is that.)

I think Missouri would be good for the boys. She could bake dean a pie and then say things to Sam that make him splutter defensively. *nod*

The angel juice has to be one of the most mockable things to come of the show, truly. I figure we get our entertainment mileage out of the show one way or another. My brother, for instance, takes great joy every time the scene changes to show the brothers having reached whatever out-of-state destination they were talking about in the previous scene, in saying "Two hours and one tank of gas later..." Hee. In "Everybody Loves a Clown" we had a very serious discussion of how long it took the boys to drive from South Dakota to Nebraska to Wisconsin because obviously they were not driving the Impala, so does that mean each trip took them more than two hours and one tank of gas?

Well, first of all, the Impala is magic. That throws the curve right there. The trunk is 4th-dimensional. Stands to reason the gas tank is, too. And with Dean behind the wheel (which Sam makes reference to in "Phantom Traveler," I believe). So there ya go.

Magic Impala. Everyone should have one. (Sam needs the interceptor system on the Crown Vic because the Crown Vic has not yet been magicked.)

In relation to the 4th-dimensional technology in the trunk, there's a con clip discussing how little luggage the guys carry, and yet they have a reasonably decent amount of clothing. Jensen explains that there's a huge back seat that we never see, and they stash the luggage back there. I believe he followed up the comment with an eye roll, but I'd have to go back and check.

They also keep the cooler in that extra back seat.

It's magic!

*nodsnods* I've probably mentioned that ever since that cooler showed up, I've been wondering where they keep it. The trunk is magic. Alternately, now that I know that the back seat is also spacious (and magic), it all makes sense! \o/

I've decided to accept that the Winchesters have a magic cloak that hides the not so subtle Impala, and also leads to a magic closet where they keep stuff like clothes and beer and mail drops.

I have reached total Winchester zen.

The Impala also has a Holy Water Cannon on the roof and machine guns mounted on the hood, you know. *serious nod*

So their duffel bags are in the back seat with the green cooler and all the trash from Dean's drive-through snacks?

Yes. Though there's also a vortex/wormhole that sucks up the discarded wrappers and soda cups.

I tell ya. They don't make 'em like they used to.

So much to love about Home. The first time we see Dean's epic manly tear-up. Oh, Dean. If only we knew then how badly our hearts would break for you. *snuggles Dean under my pillow*

I agree about Missouri. A lot of people had issues with how she talked to him, but I think she knew he could handle it. Besides, it was great finally seeing him pretty much speechless. And like you say, he's the one who helped her down the steps. Dean can be a rude prick when he wants to, so it's not like he felt obligated to be a gentlemen.

I love Home to the bits. I like the show from the Pilot, i was starting to love it in DitW, i got suspicious of that guy played Dean in Skin because there was something in his as an actor that put him in front and in Home i was sure i'll be watching this show cos of Dean and Jensen. That phone call to John kills me every time.
I can't stand Missouri, for a psychic she's dumb (sorry). I can see your poin that Dean wouldn't appreciate gently approach but still Anna tried it and it worked. Plus i think Missouri was too much harsh with Dean. Plus she couldn't see another ghost in the house, psychic my a.... pfff.
And that was the first time i was mad at John.

You mean Anna the fallen angel? Remember, Dean has changed a lot from the time he saw Missouri to the time he saw Anna. If he'd been to Hell for forty years when Missouri saw him, I expect she'd be gentle to Dean, too. But at this point in the show, Dean still isn't acknowledging (might not even know) he's got issues with his dad, and he hasn't sold his soul, and he hasn't been to Hell. At this point in the series, I think Missouri was appropriately tart with Dean.

Besides that, Missouri doesn't have any romantic designs on Dean. :-)

Yeah, Missouri's psychic powers are lacking, but in a way, I kind of like that because it means Sam and Dean can't depend on something just because a psychic tells them. (Pamela, too, had her own lack of judgment problems, but I'll get into that when we get to that part of the series.)

But, too each her own. I'm pretty sure you're not the only one in the fandom who doesn't like Missouri. :-)

Next up: Asylum. What an excellent creepy episode!

Oh, i agree that part of the fandom likes her and part hates her. And i was the one who liked her at first. And i agree Dean wasn't in hell yet and didn't sell his soul but he already had an awful childhood and crappy attitude from John and his family used him as a tool not a man - how could she ignore all that? And fond over Sam like his traume was the worst in the world? It's beyond my understanding...

Yeah! I've read your Asylum post - awesome observation.
