SPN - "Family Remains"
Jan. 17th, 2009 01:03 amIt's back. And about freakin' time, too. Withdrawal, I tell ya, is not fun.
Plus S1 creepy with S4 angst is for yay.
Not much in the way of the thinky thoughts on this one, though
dodger_winslow has some really good ones. A lot of what she put into words I picked up on on a peripheral/subliminal level. (Mind you, I don't agree with her stance on everything in the ep, but at the core, I don't disagree . . . )
( This way to the not-so-thinky thoughts )

It's baaaaa-aaaack!
Jan. 15th, 2009 11:15 pmTonight's SPN:
First reaction: Oh! It's S1 creepy with S4 angst!
Second reaction: We need a new television set.
And on that note, I'll hold off all other observations until I download and watch it full screen in high res.
I will say, however, that the direction they're taking Dean is making me a little nervous.

Heaven and Hell
Nov. 21st, 2008 05:55 pm*sigh*
Where to start?
If you'd asked me last night whether or not I'd continue watching SPN after last night's ep, I'd have been hard pressed to answer in the affirmative. The ep was such a muddled, contradictory, depressing mess that I just don't think I'll be able to adequately express my disappointment in the written word.
I've expected something like this to happen for a very long time (ever since "Faith," actually), and time and time again, they turn things around and I actually like it. Even Castiel, after my initial "bzuh?" and especially after his exchange with Dean at the end of ItGPSW, I'm loving Cas.
And I'm still hoping that the other shoe will drop with Ruby. (May I request that it drop on Ruby?)
After a night's sleep and hi-res re-watch, I'm feeling a little bit better, but I'm not holding out much hope right now.
But let's start from the beginning,
( shall we? )
Okay, then. It's late, and I feel like I've lost focus. Long story short, I'm coming to terms with this ep. I still don't like it, but I don't hate it as much as I did last night. Which is good, but I was so incredibly depressed that this is where they were leaving us for hiatus.
So, yeah, I'll still be watching to see what happens with Sam and Dean, but the mytharc? Took a serious turn south for me in this one.

I Know What You Did Last Summer
Nov. 15th, 2008 11:16 amFinally, iTunes decides to get with the program and upload IKWYDLS. Took 'em long enough. A Friday without a hi-res WS re-watch is just . . . a little less awesome.
This ep left me at first with a keen sense of . . . foreboding. Not just for the characters, but for my continued comfort with the show. They're walking a fine line here, and they can easily push me one way or the other. I prefer they push me to the side of "That is so AWESOME!" rather than, "Okay, I'll go along with you so far, but here's where I get off the train." Right now, I'm still with them. I anticipate sticking with them. I also anticipate much anguish next week. But enough rambling. Let's get to it.
( And the cry rang out across the field of battle and spread like wildfire among the ranks of angelic hosts: Dean Winchester is saved! )

Wishful Thinking
Nov. 8th, 2008 09:50 amOh. Oh, my. There was much that I really enjoyed in this ep because it had me giggling practically beginning to end. And there was great stuff from the Js. And Joxer the Mighty was the guest star!
Also, shall we keep track of movie shout-outs? Let's.
One brief note: When I asked Geo what he thought of the ep after, he called it "unhinged." Which is why he totally loved it.
( Ben Edlund is just not right )

Early squee
Nov. 6th, 2008 10:48 pm. . . or . . .
Ben Edlund is just not right.
Good gunga-munga, people! So much giggling from me for this episode. Plus we get more tidbits! Morsels. But I want more than morsels. I don't want hors d'oeuvres. I want at least a salad, preferably an entree. I don't want shrimp puffs; I want steak!
The Boys play so freakin' well off each other. I love them so.
More later, after I watch the download and get some rest.
Show? I love you so.

It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester
Nov. 1st, 2008 11:05 amGreetings, all, on this All Hallows' Day. I think I might actually have the time now to sit down and give my weekly blow-by-blow. It's a beautiful day out today, just got done with the elliptical machine, so I'm feeling pretty good, and there is much chewy goodness on which to cogitate from Thursday's SPN ep.
As was appropriate, we first watched It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, with pie. Normally, I would suggest that pie should be consumed with SPN, but SPN has become a show wherein I can do nothing more complicated that drink coffee lest I miss something.
But enough small talk.
( Scary little dudes with small hands )

Yellow Fever
Oct. 25th, 2008 06:53 amWell, I suppose it's time for me to get my thoughts in order.
kalquessa and
izhilzha pretty much hit all the high points, but I'll do my best. This one will be a little more difficult, because I have mixed feelings about this ep. Given last week's promo, I thought it would be angsty, but I've thought for a week that Dean's scream that they included at the end of the promo was . . . . kinda silly. Turns out, I was right. (On the upside, I got a kick out of Geo getting a kick out of this stuff.)
( Fear and angst: Now with 75% more humor . . . )
This ep has grown on me with repeated viewing (and widescreen, hi-res picture). It felt kind of uneven, what with the combination of humor and what could have been really good, top-notch, character-revealing angst. I was really hoping to get more specifics regarding Dean's nightmares and his time in Hell. Alas, no.
At one point, I thought, "Oh, okay, the first half is going to be humor, then we'll get to the good stuff in the second half." That didn't really happen to my satisfaction, either. But after pulling it apart with Izhi and Cheese Elf, I think I'm okay with it. And as always, there's something to recommend it. In this case, it's Jensen's comedic talents, and wouldn't I love to see that boy in an out-and-out comedy. (Alas, I've never had the opportunity to see Ten Inch Hero.)
Wow. I really need to cut the length on these things, don't I.

Monster Movie
Oct. 17th, 2008 12:50 pmWow. Squee. Giggle. More giggle. Oh, Dean. Have I mentioned lately that I love you? You crack me up. That's very important to me. Just ask my husband.
So. (Have you noticed that I begin a lot of entries with "So"?) This ep, as always, plays much better for me in widescreen, hi-res, without the friggin' CW pop-ups. And I was delighted that it was available on iTunes first thing this morning. My reactions haven't changed all that much upon re-watch, but my enjoyment certainly has.
This was a delightful, giggle-inducing, solid humor ep. And a delightful respite from the heavy-duty angst arc we've been (necessarily) getting for the past several weeks. At first, I wouldn't have counted it as a favorite humor ep, but then, this is coming from someone who loved "Hell House," with its twists and reveals and prank war.
But, I still loved "Monster Movie." This post will probably look like a blow-by-blow commentary, almost a transcript. But seriously? There's so much here to love.
The love
( begins with the opening logo )
Now, about the previews for next week . . .
Dude. Duuuuude. DUUUUUUUUDE!!!
Is it Thursday yet?

"Metamorphosis"
Oct. 11th, 2008 04:29 pmWell, okay. It's taken me some time to assimilate this ep, and there's a lot to be said that I just don't have the energy to say right now. This ep has already led to some major disagreements in the fandom (from what little I've observed), and my Dean-girl colors are showing because I mostly am totally down with his view of things . . . but not completely.
I wasn't real impressed with this ep the first time through, but a lot of it was not the ep's fault. Here, in a nutshell:
( Upon first viewing . . . )
( Upon second viewing, my opinion is much improved, and the download from iTunes improves it even more )
Overall, I think this one has a lot to recommend it, even if it did fall a bit short in some areas for me.

"In the Beginning"
Oct. 4th, 2008 01:58 pmUm . . . okay . . . wow. I'm not quite sure what to make of this episode. Ot1h, going in almost totally unspoiled (I knew it was a time travel ep, who the special guest star was going to be, and that we'd be meeting young Mary and young John--but other than that, zip) . . . going in unspoiled, I had some of the most jaw-dropping, visceral reactions I've had to TV since . . . Farscape, maybe?
Otoh, I'm really ambivalent about a lot of things in this ep. I'll be able to assimilate them eventually, because this is the information we're given. But seriously? I have mixed feelings.
( This way to my inner monologue . . . )
And there you have it. There were some things I really liked about the ep, some things that made me start wondering again what John knew when, and some things that I'm just going to have to assimilate because I don't really like them, but they're part of canon now, and I must deal.
But the promos for next week have me totally stoked. It looks like it could be a tie-in with this week (dude, TBC), or it could be a MotW, which I'm so jonesing for right now.

SPN S4 Premiere - Lazarus Rising
Sep. 19th, 2008 04:50 pmThe evening started with a rehearsal from which I did not get home until 9:30pm. Then I come home to discover that the Tivo is frozen on the Message screen. The light said it was recording, but I had no way to get the Tivo to let me watch until I could disconnect it and reboot. So I called
izhilzha, and she got to hear me whine until the recording finished and I could initiate the start-up sequence (read: unplug the dang thing and start over.) Thankfully, the show did record, and I was able to watch it with bated breath.
july_july_july asked that I post my own impressions of last night's ep (I assume so that she wouldn't have to go looking for them).
So here they are.
( Wow. Just . . . wow. )
