A random, and possibly dense, SPN trivia question

I've seen in several places recently a reference of Dean's fear of rats. And for the life of me, I can't figure out where this notion comes from. I assume I'm missing some canon point of trivia, so if anyone can point me to the appropriate episode and scene to answer the question, I'd appreciate it.

"Hell House". Dean doesn't say he's scared of them - he says he hates them. Sam asks if he would rather the noise come from ghosts, and Dean answers "yes".

So not a fear -- a dislike.

Oh, thank you! So I didn't miss anything. That's what I figured it was--a dislike of rats, not a fear. And I couldn't figure out where these people were getting that he was "afraid" of them. I suppose it's a logical extrapolation, but thank you for confirming that I'm not losing it. :-) Because I totally did not interpret that line as "fear."

I agree -it's a mighty big jump for a "macho" character. Could be compounded by the reaction of the Ghostfacer crew when the rat appeared in "Ghostfacers". People often conflate characterisation like that.

I can't think of any canon incident wherein Dean (or Sam) has an actual phobia. Fear of flying does not translate into a fear of planes. Dislike of rats does not necessarily translate into a fear of rats (though if someone wants to take it as a fear--though not a phobia--I suppose I can handwave it). There's so much angst going on in canon, I guess the need to give the Boys even more kind of puzzles me. *shrug*

ET correct myself . . . I suppose Dean's fear of flying could be seen as a phobia (not that I know the clinical definition of such a phobia). But still. To translate that into a fear of planes? Um . . . noooooo . . . I don't think so.

Looks like others have it covered: not a fear of, but a dislike/disgust for that gets inflated into a phobia sometimes. I couldn't remember which ep was home to the "I hate rats" exchange, and was going to guess "Assylum" so I'm glad someone had a better memory than I do.
