SPN 6.02 - "Two and a Half Men"

If you loathed the ep with a white-hot passion, you might want to skip this commentary. It's not uber!squeeful, but upon re-watch, I didn't hate it.
I don't think I have as much to say about this one as last week. When there comes a point in the ep wherein I get the feeling that "this isn't living up to standards," that's . . . a problem.
I will say that I did like the character stuff, as uncomfortable as it was. The case? Not so much. This is the second week in a row we get a retread on a previous monster, and I miss the creepy. But let's get started, shall we?
Then . . .
Sam's back from the dead, he wanted Dean to have the family Dean's always wanted. He's been hunting with family. Samuel is back from the dead. Shapeshifters. Dean's going back for Lisa and Ben.
In case you missed that anvil that dropped about an inch from your toes, this season is "all about family." More on that later.
Now . . .
Hey, isn't that Bobby's mantel piece?
Bloody mom trying to hide herself and baby from something chasing them. Family in peril! Eeep!!!
Title card.
Newly rented house . . . and it's Dean & Co.
Dean, checking out his weapons cache, making sure everything is there. Sam's shotgun, his own shotgun . . . Everything in its place. He closes the trunk, stashes the keys, covers the Impala, and touches her for reassurance that yes, she's still there if he needs her. And he goes to unpack kitchen appliances.
Hey, are those the interiors they used in "Family Remains?" They seem vaguely familiar. Sort of. Anyway . . .
Ben is bummed. Lisa is a trouper--and a mom. And Dean's just trying to hold it together. Trying to find everyday explanations to keep Ben distracted--and safe. Because his OCD has graduated to paranoia. Lisa knows something's up and comes up with a compromise. Dean knows he's got issues. The tension, it is like pea soup.
Lansing, Michigan. Huh.
Sam, working the case alone. Competence, he haz it.
"And the baby, you think it's okay?" Um, Sam? Here's a clue. A baby named Emma Cooper is a "she," not an "it." Please take note.
Written by Adam Glass. *squinty eyes at Show* *IMDBs* *more squinty eyes* Show, why you have a writer who writes mostly crime drama writing for your horror-based show? Hm? Could this explain why the case felt a little off-kilter? Hm?
Also, new director? This could explain much.
Dean has ordered pizza for lunch, and Ben and Lisa are all "Bzuh? I thought we were going out." But Dean is all, "Oops, sorry." And Lisa will go along with it, but she's a good people reader. And Dean, he knows the ice is getting thinner. He sees it, but can't help himself.
Sam bounces the case off Samuel, who hates computers. Also? Samuel isn't just a hunter, he's got vigilante tendencies. I have a feeling that even if it were a people-perpetrated crime, he'd still be all for hunting them down and eliminating the problem. Because either way, babies are getting snatched. Hm . . .
And Sam wonders about himself. He knows something's off with him. It's why he wanted Dean back, to help balance out whatever is out of whack. Yet he's zen enough with it to be comfortable with himself, for now.
And Sam finds the first clue toward cracking the case.
Dean finds Ben in the garage playing with the shotgun. Either Ben is a sneaky, determined little dude, or Dean was not so secretive in where he kept the keys to the Impala. Either way, Dean was not expecting to find his "son" playing with firearms. Uh-oh.
Oh, Dean. Your first taste of the tension of being a parent. "You had your own rifle when you were my age." "I want to do what you do." And he wants you to teach him. Because Ben has always looked up to you and thought you were cool, like you looked up to your dad and thought he was a superhero. Also, Dean? Ben isn't stupid. He knows something's up and that you're acting weird(er than usual). You remember the changling thing? And how Ben jumped right in to help get the other kids out? If hunting/protecting runs in the blood, Ben has it, dude.
But Dean wants Ben to have options. Options that don't involve monsters and gunpowder and possibly getting killed. Oh, Dean.
And this is the first time you've ever raised your voice to Ben, isn't it. And Dean knows he screwed up, and . . .
When worlds collide. Oh, Dean.
Sam works well in a hunting family. Also, apparently it is now Sam who talks with his mouth full and wolfs down sandwiches on the go. Heh.
Yay, Lisa! To gently call Dean on his behavior. She doesn't berate him, she doesn't argue. She acquiesces to his expertise. And she wants to know what she's working with, what Dean is working with.
"I can't predict what's going to come after me." Dean is so afraid that something will happen to them because of him.
But her requests are not unreasonable. She and Ben need to know the parameters. And they have to be able to live their lives. "I know you're trying to protect us. But you're kind of scaring me a little, too." And that's the last thing Dean wants to do.
Sam in the creepy house, fights off something that reacts to silver (which we know is a shapeshifter because Show totally didn't try to keep this a mystery), and saves . . . ??? (A baby, of course. Because no mystery there.)
Did you notice all the fancy windows in this ep? Dean and Lisa's new house, the houses of the victims. Kinda goes with the architecture of a lot of the exteriors we're seeing, no? Like . . . early 20th century (or late 19th century) or something. Anyway . . .
Dean has Sam's new cell programmed into his cell phone. He knew when he picked up that it was Sam calling.
Sam calls Dean because he totally needs Dean on this one, and will drive all the way to Dean's new house if he has to. Why? Because he knows Dean cares, and this is outside of Sam's experience or expertise. Dean as a balancing influence.
The pickup truck. So indicative of Dean's determination to hold onto his new life.
I love the dramatic sting at the baby reveal. Hee!
And Dean knows he has to help out with this one, because it's about someone's baby and saving innocent children.
I love this next little scene. Dean teaches Lisa to handle a gun. And she's completely at ease with this. And when he tells her to salt the windows and the doors, she replies, "Of course" without question. She's trying to give Dean every assurance that they'll be safe while he's gone. Her confidence, it makes her awesome. Dean needs a woman like this. And it kind of makes me wonder if perhaps this is how Bill and Ellen were when they first hooked up.
But still Dean doesn't want to go. But Lisa recognizes that he needs to, and sends him off with a joke to ease the tension. You can see the good humor and understanding in her eyes and in her smirk. I WANT THEM TO STAY TOGETHER! Even if it is, you know, "apart."
And Lisa watches him leave, no doubt feeling not unlike whenever the wife of a soldier or a cop or a Fed or any such protector-by-vocation watches her man leave for work. Or perhaps it's just because she knows she's going to have to let him go.
I would have liked a good-bye hug there.
But Dean takes the truck and only the supplies that he can carry. Giving every indication that he has no intention of rejoining the life.
So, the thing freaked when you cut it with silver. Let's see. Shifter is the obvious answer. Revenant. Zombie. Ghoul? Really? I thought you had to take a headshot at them. I think you mean revenant,Mr. Glass Sam.
I gotta say, I'm loving the more light and the colors this season. Used appropriately, of course, but it's just so nice to see the guys looking so good in the light.
Adorable toothless baby is adorable! (And toothless.)
I also kinda love Sam's new car, and how it's so very different from Dean's penchant for old/used cars. (Remember at the end of S3, when Sam was renting cars and having so much fun with the keyless remote?) Yes, Dean, Sam is going to make you wear a seatbelt.
I also kinda love that even though (we find out that) Dean is not brushed up on total baby care, that he is the one who recognizes the need for supplies. *nods*
I am amused by the product placement of Boudreaux's Butt Paste. (This is the scene that the whole ep was written around. Somebody on staff discovered it and decided it had to be included in an ep. y/n?)
"So how do you know all this?" Well, Sam, because Dean helped take care of you as a kid. It's like riding a bike?
"Lisa's got a baby niece, so I've been on a few milk runs." Okay, or that. Which means that Dean has met and shopped for Lisa's extended family. Dean has "in-laws." Oh, Dean.
I love Jensen. I love the startle he gives when Baby looks directly at him before preparing to work up the cry. Love, love, double ♥.
Dean also recognizes when a baby is going to lose it.
Baby wailing in the checkout line. And Sam expects Dean to make it stop. Because apparently when it comes to handling such things, Sam's patience, it is no longer. And I really, really want Dean to know that picking up and cuddling the baby might help. But they go for the awkward "is he dripping" grip, which, okay, is amusing, but dude, cuddle the kid.
Also, they keep calling him "it." He's not an it, guys. He's a "he." Ooh. Actually, it's Sam who calls the baby "it," and Dean's reply is more of a toss-back. Because Dean's next option is "Maybe he needs a diaper change."
Baby's name . . . I find it really interesting that Sam's answer is "John," and Dean's answer is "Bobby." Current father perception? Sam has started recognizing that John did what he had to and has come to terms with it, while Dean still feels that Bobby fills that void? Perhaps it speaks to how they each have started relating to people? It's just kind of a chewy morsel.
And Dean might not have hunted in a while, but he's observant enough and fast enough to recognize an 'shifter on a video monitor, and he's not lost his tendency to threaten monsters.
Then it's football with the baby, Dean attacking an "old lady," and Sam and Dean make their escape. Also? Shapeshifters have really good eyesight.
NASA apparently designed the straps on baby carriers. Heh.
The 'shifter could have been following Sam this whole time. Hm . . . Not sure what Sam could have done about that, but maybe you need to brush up on recognizing when you're being tailed?
'Shifter is now a cop.
I do love Dean taking care of Bobby John. Because it's adorable and he's a natural.
Dean is not afraid to change a diaper, and he hums classic rock instead of lullabies. (Fanfic, anyone?)
But, Sam. You really need to stop calling the baby "it." Seriously.
Sam is surprised and impressed with Dean's baby skills, while Dean brushes it off. Though, Dean? "That thing"? I get the self-depricative tone of the words, but if I'm gonna get on Sam about calling a baby "it," I gotta call you on calling him a "thing."
Also, "Dr. Huxtable." That makes two pop cult references that Sam has made in this ep. The role reversal, it is anvilicious. (And I say that with amusement.)
"You're, like, father material."
"Well, I kinda had to be lately, ya know?" Okay, the "lately" sorta threw me off, because again, Dean took care of Sam. But Dean is thinking in recent tangibles--Ben. "Sink or swim." Indeed. Which leads us to the deep discussion.
Dean is starting to think of Ben as his. He wants different (better?) for Ben than what he and Sam had. But Sam knows--from way back during Jump the Shark--that it's not quite possible. (Except now he's more matter-of-fact about it, whereas with Adam, he was more angry.) He puts into words what Dean has been fearing: that Dean is falling into the same pattern John did. Whether out of necessity or fear, his desire to protect those he cares about is forcing Dean into the only behavior pattern he knows for such things. He wants Ben to have a choice. But he might not be able to afford him that choice without losing them. And he's scared.
And Sam notices the second important clue in the case. And Sam is really liking working with Dean again. He's eager for the two of them to get out their and question the dad. But . . . what about the baby? So Dean will stay behind.
And you know, when Dean dips his finger in the whisky and lets the baby taste it, my first thought was teething, and whether or not whisky on the gums would help.
Sam questions the extra dad and puts two and two together.
Dean tries to enjoy the magic fingers, which looks and sounds to be on the blink. Either that, or it's just not as pleasant as it used to be. Methinks the road has, at this moment, lost a bit of allure.
Splatter above the crib! Different (and slightly gooey) baby in the crib! A baby 'shifter! (Have I read this somewhere before?)
Dean cleans the baby up, and he is not so rusty as to not be suspicious of someone trying to get in the room. Cop!shifter gets in. Stand-off.
"The baby should be with his father . . . I'm talking about our father." *gasp* Not Lucifer! Lucifer is father of monsters? Noooo! We're done with that mytharc! No more Lucifer! He's in the cage! Please?
Sammy shoots the 'shifter.
Shifter poses as dad to impregnate women. Wait. Haven't I seen this somewhere else before? There was an X-Files ep that did this, isn't there? With the creature convincing one of the women he was Luke Skywalker. Or something.
"I didn't even know they had babies." That makes three of us, Sam. I, too, thought it was a genetic mutation. In fact, didn't the 'shifter in St. Louis say as much? Does this mean that Dracula!shifter's mom was a 'shifter?
Sam has never seen a baby monster. Sam is sounding like Travis, but even Travis couldn't kill a baby rugaru.
But to Dean it's not a monster, it's just a baby. "It's not its fault its dad's a 'shifter." *hugs Dean* You know, you're starting to sound a lot like Sam used to. (All together now: role reversal)
"We can't drop it off at an orphanage. They might get upset when it turns Asian." Heh.
Sam wants to take the baby to Samuel, because he'll know what to do. Um . . . Sam? I'm glad you trust them and that they've let you in, but I gotta say, I'm kinda with Dean on this one. Dean doesn't know them. Why would he trust them?
"Not every hunter is a head case. Samuel . . . is a lot like you."
"I'm a freakin' head case."
Heh.
But Dean has no other ideas.
The Campbell compound. I . . . am intrigued, yet uneasy.
Dean has the baby; the cousins are smirky. Now, the thing about Gwen? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that her mom died early, and she was raised with and by men. That just seems to be how she relates to everyone. A shell of snark. Sometimes good natured, if ill-advised. Sometimes just outright sarcastic. She's got the hunter snark down, but she's got none of the feminine intuition that Ellen and Jo had. Methinks she could have used an Ellen in her life.
Then there's Mark, who is not so much with the words.
And Dean is loathe to trust any of them. Whereas they think they're worthy of Dean's trust simply because they're family. Um, Samuel? You remember when you told Dean you didn't trust other hunters? Yeah. Dean does take after you in that regard.
Meanwhile, Chris--who appears to be the eldest of this generation, does have an attitude about it. And Sam sticks up for Dean, however subtly.
Dean will relinquish the baby to Sam, but to no one else. Because Sam's the only one he comes close to trusting.
Samuel reinforces the family angle with a tidbit of reminiscence of when Mary was born. He suggests they raise the baby 'shifter. "It's dangerous for him out there."
Dean is, of course, still suspicious. He's seeing hunters from the outside now, and he doesn't trust those he doesn't know. Maybe it is his time in the Pit that makes him assume the worst, but it's a valid concern, even if he doesn't know what Samuel is up to with collecting monsters.
Though Chris kind of has a point that their purposes aren't necessarily nefarious, throwing Dean's time in the Pit back at him? Totally uncalled for, dude. That's hitting below the belt. (Though on re-watch, I notice that Chris starts his point more as a statement of fact than with any malice. The malice comes later. Still, not a topic that's open for discussion, and not something that can fairly be thrown at someone you want to consider you "family.")
And Sam? What's that look there? How and why did you let Dean's time in on the rack and off become a topic of conversation? Was it something offered by way of explanation of Dean's life (and death) experiences? Was alcohol involved? Was it something offered to family in trust, that now gets used as on offensive? WT???, dude?
And again, Sam steps in, subtly defending Dean, who becomes with each passing moment more of an outsider.
And at least Samuel seems to understand where Dean's concerns are coming from. His tone is even, reasoned, leaving at least the suggestion for options available.
But Mark? Of all the things you could say right now? That was not the best choice.
And Dean lays it on the table why he doesn't trust them. 'Cause he's learned that unexplained (and sometimes explained) resurrections are nuthin' but trouble.
But Samuel just wants to invite him into the Family.
Christian and Arlene have been trying for a baby, and no luck. So Samuel hands a baby right to him. I don't think I need to explain why that hits me in a way that it might not hit most of the fandom.
"You've got no business raising anything."
"Why, Dean? 'Cause he's a hunter?" Oh, Sam. Dean is well aware of the life he was raised in. He's just struggling to make his two worlds mesh. You used to believe it was possible to hold onto the outside world, too. Remember?
The canine alarms go off, and Samuel hands the baby to Dean, then sends the Winchesters to the panic room while the Campbells arm up. Dean looks for a moment like he'd stay and fight, but Samuel recognizes that Dean is the best option for taking the baby--and the least in practice of the hunters. Sam goes with Dean to protect Dean and the baby. *quirks brow*
Shifter looks like Samuel! Shifter can't be killed with silver!
Mark! We hardly knew ye! At this point, I'm inclined to believe that the Campbells are who they say they are, and their days are limited.
Sam tells Dean to stay with the baby. Like Dean really needs to be reminded?
Shifter appears as Sam and goes after Sam, Dean, and the baby.
Shifter takes Sam out and morphs into Dean. Here's what I noticed this morning as I was reading
girlyghoul70's review:
. . . did you notice that alpha-shifter shifted to mirror the alpha in the room? In the first attack, he was Samuel, clearly the alpha male in the room.
Then he shifted into Sam, which . . . let's get into some sociology, shall we? Why was Sam the alpha in the room? Because he appeared to be protecting the other adult in the room, the one holding the baby? Does that, to the 'shifter, make the one giving the childcare the weaker of the family? *gives 'shifter squinty eyes*
Then after he dispatched Sam, he shifted into Dean, now the only remaining adult in the room--and the one protecting the baby.
'Shifter-dude? This is not the first time Dean has seen a 'shifter look like him. Just sayin'.
When Dean starts asking questions, I find it kind of interesting that Samuel looks to Sam, as if confirming that it's okay to "bring Dean in" on the case. He's deferring to Sam in matters of Dean, and that's not a bad way to play it at this point in the game. They don't know Dean, and Dean doesn't know them. Dean is white knuckling it, as Lisa says, and it's a good idea to check with the guy who knows Dean best. Also, it allows Sam the illusion that he's protecting Dean. Samuel is good at playing people like that.
Okay, wait. There's "tons of lore" about alpha 'shifters? So how come Dean, who was no slouch in his day and has dealt with multiple 'shifters, does not know this, hm? "It's not a myth" I get. "There's tons of lore"? This goes in there with "I thought all mom's relatives are dead." How did Dean (and presumably Sam, prior to Samuel telling him) not know this?
(Of course, I must remember the scene that most bothers me from RSaM and Monster Movie, where telling Dean something becomes a vehicle for exposition rather than, you know, actually true to character. At least here it is, perhaps, something we might not expect Dean to know. Maybe.)
Also, if it's the first one, it must be ancient, yeah?
And . . . Dean is questioning Sam's level of intel clearance and disclosure in this case. The secrets, will they never stop? (Of course, if Sam did know what was going on from the jump, that could totally be why he wanted Dean in on this case--because Dean was the only one he'd trust with the baby . . . But if that's the case, he's much improved on his dissembling skills.)
Who is Samuel reporting in to? THE QUESTIONS!!!!
Back home with Lisa, and Ben is out riding his bike. Dean looks out the window and sees a world of confusion. His world. He knows it's a world of danger, and he wants to do the right thing, do what's best for Lisa and Ben. But he doesn't know what that is. To stay or to go? And he knows he's becoming something he's not. He's tasted freedom from The Life, and he's always been an easygoing, jovial guy at heart. But his worlds' colliding, it's tearing him apart.
Dean, your dad "was exactly like this, all the time." But he didn't have Mary. You have Lisa. You can break with the pattern.
Lisa, being her awesome self, does know what Dean needs to do. "You're not a construction worker. You're a hunter. . . . You don't want to be here, Dean."
"Yes, I do." And he says it without hesitation and with such feeling, such conviction and passion, that I'm convinced he means it. Not because he's obligated by a promise, but because he does. want. to. be. there. This is his home now, or at least it's as important as what came before and what lies ahead. Dean wants to stay. Not because he has to, but because he wants to.
And honestly, I could kiss Lisa for actually putting it into words. "You're white-knuckling it, living like this, like what you are is some bad, awful thing. But you're not."
"But I'm not gonna have this discussion every time you leave." She's not going to fall into bad patterns, either. She's going to make Dean move forward, break him out of those patterns, because that's what he needs.
But when she says, "I need you to go." The pain that crosses Dean's face. He's being given his walking papers.
"I can't just lose you and Ben."
"That's not what I'm saying."
"You're saying hit the road." Because family leaving him is a wound that runs deep.
"Dean, if there's some rule that says all this has to be either/or, how about we break it."
And the look on Dean's face--like it's never occurred to him that it could go both ways. That he could hunt and have a home and people who love him. Man, I wish Ellen were still around to talk to them.
"Ben and I will be here, and you come when you can. Just be sure you come in one piece."
"You really think we can make something like that work?"
"It's worth a shot." And her smile and her eyes say it all--she is so willing to give it a go. Because if she doesn't do this, she will lose him. She's never pushed him to give more than he can give, and she's confident enough in herself and in him and in them to know.
Dean, if ever this woman deserved a hug, now would be the time.
Uncovering the Impala! Impala!porn! Glory shots! Dean's smile at the prospect of getting behind the wheel again--for a hunt. It makes me smile.
So, yeah, overall this ep played better the second time around. The case is still a little wonky, and I'd prefer we not go the X-Files route so blatantly. (I wasn't an X-Phile, so while I appreciate the show, it's not one of my fandom loves.)
As I said, lots of good character stuff, and I do hope we see and/or hear from Lisa more often. With regular check-ins and Dean missing her in his bed and missing teaching Ben how to fix an engine and all that. That year off from hunting, that year of nurturing and comfort and care from Lisa and Ben did Dean a world of good, and I want his progress to continue moving forward.
As for Sam . . . Sam suspects something's missing from him. He knows something's wrong, and he wants to know what brought him back and why. But he's got a job to do, and he's gonna do it.
All in all, I'm still interested.
However, I'm also ready to get back to unfamiliar monsters (because we've had a retread of an old monster two weeks running), and I'm ready to return to the creepy of the early seasons. Please, can we take back the creepy? And the brotherliness. But I'm willing to wait for that to develop, so long as it does. Develop.

I think you mean revenant,
I gotta say, I'm loving the more light and the colors this season.
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
. . . did you notice that alpha-shifter shifted to mirror the alpha in the room?
Develop.

Date: 2010-10-02 07:18 pm (UTC)The fancy windows: Supernatural has a long history of using houses in the Arts & Crafts/Craftsman styles, or the less elaborate Victorian styles, both of which like their panes and fancy glass. Whoever does their locations has a real eye for architecture.
"Designed by NASA": got a laugh from all of us, especially Trudy (who babysits her nieces a lot).
Whiskey for teething: Trudy and Mary both attested to the effectiveness of liquor as a topical anesthetic!
Dean & Lisa: I was reminded of military families, where one spouse is gone for long periods of time. Not everyone can handle that. But I'd bet Lisa could.
Good thoughts! Thanks!

Date: 2010-10-02 07:30 pm (UTC)Good to know about the whisky as topical anesthetic. Dean has an instinct about parenting infants. Who knew?
RE: Dean&Lisa as military family . . . Exactly! I'm hoping that's how they play it. Only, you know, the hunter/Harvelle-esque version of that.
Thanks for the notes!

Date: 2010-10-04 05:05 pm (UTC)And yeah, the whiskey-on-the-fingertip moment got a giggle from me. My parents and grandparents swear by this method of soothing a teething baby. And Fee? This made me think of that fic where the "soup" Dean makes for Sam when he's sick turns out to be mostly booze and bouillon cubes. *cracks up*

SO MANY QUESTIONS!

Date: 2010-10-03 02:21 am (UTC)Although I admit that 'shifters are the one monster on SPN that I have no problem with repeating. They always do something different with them--"Skin" was our intro, the revealing of identity; "Nightshifter" was a lockdown horror thing, but that shifter was after money; "Monster Movie" was something else again, and now we get baby shifters and shifter social structure, etc.
<3 Lisa. I also hope we get much more of her and Ben, being Dean's home even while he hunts. I LOVED his, "I want to be here." As you said, no hesitation, full of real emotion. He loves Lisa and Ben. They love him. That's family, there. It's...oh. It's hope. You know how we've talked so often about the boys never having real hope? Dean does, now. :)

Date: 2010-10-03 12:07 pm (UTC)And I agree; shapeshifters are awesome. But I think I kind of agree with girlyghoul70 in that it would have been nice if they'd played some mystery to it. Even just a little bit. At some point. And it could be that I felt this particular "twist" (the social structure) had been done before . . . because I've read parts of "Skin Deep," and I was a little distracted by that.
And it was the second week in a row wherein we have a monster we've already met. Not sayin' it's not cool to see them back. But perhaps not in back-to-back epis.
It's hope. You know how we've talked so often about the boys never having real hope? Dean does, now. :)
I'm scared to even *glee* at the prospect, for fear of it being snatched away.
Hey, do you have time this week to beta a conversational piece? It seems Dean wants to talk to Ben.
