feliciakw: (Jensen promo)

. . . to download something before its official release.

Which is silly, because if Jensen were not involved in the project, it wouldn't even be on my radar.

As it is? All the great reviews that Batman: Under the Red Hood is getting is making me very anxious to see this movie. Seriously. Cannot wait.

Of all the comic book universes, I'm most familiar with the DC characters, specifically Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. I loved the live action Wonder Woman TV show when I was a kid, and I watched SuperFriends every Saturday morning (you know, back when Saturday mornings were the only time you could see cartoons).

But Batman . . . well, Batman is some of my earliest recollected pretend. My cousin J and I watched re-runs of the 1960s campy Adam West Batman every afternoon. (BAM! POW! SOCK! ZOWEE!) We LOVED it. I had coloring books and action figures (receipt of my Wonder Woman and Batgirl action figures was undeniable proof that Santa Claus was real) and a little zip-strip Batmobile. I even had a holiday edition Batman comic book. (I should pull that out and read it sometime. I don't recall ever actually reading it when I was a kid. I enjoyed comics for the pictures rather than the text.) But the most creative part of it all? Was two little girls running around the back yard in table cloth capes pretending to be Batman and Robin. I was always Robin, because I'm younger. I believe this is one of the reasons I'm more likely to relate to a sidekick than I am a hero in most buddy shows.

Oh, we were delighted when Batgirl showed up, but until then, the only woman in the show was Catwoman, who, admittedly, was very cool, but she was also a villain. (Julie Newmar is the Catwoman I remember best. Oh! And now that I think about it, I had a Batman/Catwoman ViewMaster set with Julie Newmar as Catwoman.) But what I remember, and what my dad has pictures of, is "Batman" and "Robin" running around the back yard. IIRC, Batman had a green table cloth cape, and Robin had a red checkered one. Or maybe it was the other way around. Anyway . . .

It wasn't until I was older that I realized the original source material was much darker than Saturday morning cartoons and Adam West, and that the comics were actually geared more toward adults and older kids.

Michael Keaton surprised me as Batman in the modern live action movies. He was known mostly for his comedy at that point, but I was impressed with his performance as the Dark Knight. And I've seen a couple of the other of the live action movies, but they just haven't been my thing.

By the time Batman: TAS came out, I had long since lost interest in superhero cartoons, though I do remember the series being quite critically acclaimed, and Geo has Mask of the Phantasm on laser disc, which I'm sure I've seen, even if I don't remember.

For Christmas the Christmas before Geo proposed (I think it was), I gave him a huge framed, encased reproduction of a TAS storyboard, signed by Mark Hamill (who will always be Luke Skywalker to me, but also is the defining voice of the animated Joker).

So, yeah. I have a nodding acquaintance with The Batman, but comics have never really been "my thing."

Which is why it's ridiculous how much I'm looking forward to seeing B:UtRH.

I was a little disappointed to have the mystery of the story spoiled for me by the IMDB main page for the movie. But then I asked Geo when the story ran in the comics, and he told me circa the mid-80s. (I vaguely remember it in hard cover or special edition form in the bookstores.) So at this point, I think all spoiler warnings have long since expired. So I did some research into the character of Red Hood (rather than try to get caught up on backstory by tracking down the comics . . . though I expect the movie to include backstory for the newcomers), and I can totally see why an actor would want to sink his teeth into this character .

The early promotional footage for the movie really piqued my interest. I'm thrilled that Jensen is expanding his experience base, and watching the vid clips reminds me of doing oral interpretation, which is one of my very favorite forms of drama to perform.

Then the clips from the movie were released, and my word! If I didn't know it was Jensen, I wouldn't know it was Jensen. [livejournal.com profile] scionofgrace and I had a conversation about the difference he has put in his voice than what we're used to hearing. This made me even more eager to hear his performance.

And now? Now the reviews are coming out (some from, I assume, legitimate media outlets that have received a pre-release copy; others from bootleg downloads). And with one or two minor exceptions, everyone is praising Jensen's performance. Some go as far as to say that his is the best performance in the movie. Quite a feat for a first-time voice actor, no? One user reviewer said he doesn't like Jensen (for whatever reason--there's no accounting for taste) but still says he did an excellent job.

I must admit, I'd be extremely tickled if Jensen became the "defining voice" for this character in much the same way that Mark Hamill has become the defining voice for The Joker. And if they ever make this story into a live action? If Jensen plays Red Hood, I'm so there.

So anyway, yeah. I'm so very, very much looking forward to this flick. I've got it on my Netflix queue, but that's telling me it won't be available until August (maybe I didn't get in line soon enough). But I'm really tempted to check out one of the downloads that are cropping up. Because I'm practically salivating, that's how eager I am to see/hear this movie.

"And if they ever make this story into a live action? If Jensen plays Red Hood, I'm so there. "

Or... what if Christian Bale... bails and they need a new Batman. When Jensen delivered the line "I'm Batman" in Bad Day at Black Rock I believed him :-)!

Though bringing in this Red Hood cat to the live action, that would also be all kinds of awesome. WUV's me some misguided anti-hero types.

If he gets a role on the silver screen, I'm there opening weekend, regardless of the movie. MBV is proof of that. :-)

As far as Jensen playing conflicted villains, you should see the S1 Dark Angel ep called "Pollo Loco." I'm sure you can find his scenes on YouTube.

Also, the S2 ep, "The Berrisford Agenda."

ETA: Okay, I just checked YouTube, and no such luck. Next time we get together, I'll bring some Jensen stuff.

*shivers* When we left the Dark Knight Marirose commented they could never do another Joker because they could never find an actor who could bring the intesity that Heath Ledger brought to it.

I said "Jensen Ackles could."

The finger of fate just crawled down my back, reading your post.

Not Joker - but the Red Hood. . .

ETA in the total non sequeture sort of thing - is it just me as I'm seeing the photos out of Europe but is Jensen's beard red? A mahogany red but definately red.

Yeah, I think it's fair to say that his beard has a definite red cast to it. Last year, during the Australian con, a lot of people were commenting on his ginger beard.

If it's true that he has Scottish (or Scotch-Irish) in his background, it makes sense, no?

As for your prognostication, yes. Oh, yes.
