Finally saw The Blind Side this weekend. Excellent movie. I highly recommend. A great movie about family and love extending beyond blood and beyond expectations. If anyone has seen it and wants to chat, let me know.
This movie has so much to love about it. The cast is great (Sandra Bullock won Best Actress for the role), the story is pretty amazing, and it's a good, solid family film beginning to end. I love that the point is made that the family is Christian, without throwing it in our faces. They just are. And they're strong and caring and (especially mom) will defend the family to the end.
I also like that Michael's mom, from whom Michael was taken away because of her drug habit and illegal activity was not painted as an evil person. She wasn't evil; she was extremely lost and abused in her way of life and not seeking a way out.
I loved the relationship that the family and Michael develop, and how he changes their lives as well as their changing his.
And it's based on a true story.
It's awesome. If you want a heartwarming family drama with some great performances and great writing, you need to see this.
Last night, Geo and I went out for Thai food with friends and then to the silent film they were showing at the Library of Congress campus. The Sea Hawk is a movie from 1924, and has pretty much everything you'd expect in a high adventure story: love, betrayal, sword fights, intrigue, and battles royal on the seas. The LoC had their house/guest accompanist play for the show, and he's pretty amazing. He played the entire 2 hours, of course, and did so without benefit of a score. All extemporized. Amazing.
This afternoon we drove to the new cineplex in Fredricksburg, Muvico 12, to see Toy Story 3. LOVED it. I think it's my favorite of the Toy Story movies. (Sid in the first one freaks me out, and I don't remember much of anything about the second one, which tells you what kind of impression it made on me.) We saw it in 3D, of course, which is always fun.
The theater, though. Wow! It's fashioned to look like a film studio/lot on the outside, and an updated version of the movie palaces of old on the inside. Not nearly as ornate as the actual restored palaces, but the flavor, the nod, is definitely there. And all of their projection is digital. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
The cineplex is in the same building as a bowling alley and restaurant called Splitsville. As you come in the building, the cineplex is to the right, the bowling alley and restaurant are to the left. It's a really nice facility, and I think we'll be frequenting it again soon.
