So, this afternoon's after work viewing was "Bloodlust." One or two interesting things popped out, in light of later events.

[livejournal.com profile] girlyghoul70 makes some delightful points about this ep here (in the comment thread).

LoveloveLOVE the Impala love and the happy Dean and the happy Sammy as a result of happy Dean and the wind in the windows and 300 miles to Red Lodge and opening up the throttle and "Listen to that purr" and "Don't listen to him, baby, he doesn't understand us" and "Give you a couple of dead bodies and some cattle mutilations and you're Mister Sunshine." SO MUCH TO LOVE.

Also? Banter. In the sheriff's office. "I'm new."

Competition in the morgue. Who gets to open the box, who gets to go digging in the mouth.

Oooh!!! New ally? The Winchesters have made a reputation for themselves, and they don't even know it. I kinda liked Gordon at first. Not necessarily trust, but someone else to network with. Until Ellen's warning. Then all bets are off.

Also also? The different reactions to Dean's beheading the vamp--Gordon with almost gleeful admiration, Sam with disbelieving worry. And Dean with blood splatter on his face. Sam recognizing that Dean is still in some kind of spiral.

Now, the scene that always interests me in this ep is the celebratory scene in the bar. Not only do we get confirmation that Sam is okay with Dean--AND ONLY DEAN--calling him "Sammy," but we get the dubious male bonding between Dean and Gordon. Dean needs someone he can talk to, and Gordon seems to understand. They swap stories about their first hunts (character background! \o/). And we get . . . Gordon telling Dean it's okay to have a dark hole inside you that gets bigger and bigger. And Gordon questioning Sam's dedication to the job. We get Gordon telling Dean that he "embraced the life." That it's "in his blood." And later, that Dean's a killer. But the thing is . . . no. Dean might enjoy hunting, and it might be something he's uniquely suited to, but for Dean, it's about saving people first. Saving people, hunting things. Not the other way around. I believe there's a reason the line was written that way, because (for Dean), saving people comes first. For Gordon, killing and revenge come first. And loner that he is, he still sees what he views as a kindred spirit and possible protégé in Dean. One who has a solid reputation in the community.

This brings to mind why I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle Dean's situation at the beginning of S6. Because as early as mid-S2, we get that Dean is tired, that he wants to step back. That the uncomplicated exhilaration of the job is more infrequent. But saving people is what's inherent in Dean's makeup. Saving people and taking care of those he loves.

And for a brief moment, Dean also sees Gordon as a kindred spirit. Someone to swap war stories with. Someone who will praise and congratulate him on a job well done. And someone who's telling him what he wants to hear at this point in time. But . . . no.

When Sam accuses Dean of trying to replace John with Gordon, I totally wanted to say no, that's Bobby. And not so much a replacement as a surrogate. *nods*

Anyway, as the story progresses, Dean knows--has always known--where his loyalties lie. With Sam. And he comes to his senses, sees Gordon for the sadistic psycho that he is. And we get the first hint at what the Big Secret might be when Gordon says that he killed his sister, and that Dean would do the same if necessary. Which of course tells us that Gordon doesn't get Dean at all.

Dean helps Sam get the vegetarian vamps out of Dodge by detaining Gordon. Even though it goes against every instinct he has, he trusts Sam's judgment and the reaming Sam gave him that if the vamps aren't evil, it's not their job to kill them.

And we get a hint, a taste, a flavor of what's to come later. Sam is Dean's conscience when Dean is blinded by grief. He needs Sam to keep him grounded.

Also x3, I'm still convinced that the camera is having a torrid and ongoing affair with one Jensen Ackles. Seriously. Did you see that final close-up? With serendipitous lens flair?
