Spoilery speculation
May. 24th, 2007 08:57 pmFor Bren, who wanted to hear my spoilery speculations:
In a nutshell:
Dwayne Carter was about to reveal to Taylor Ashby a 4th double agent name.
Colby's turning in Carter screwed that up.
Ashby approached Colby, asking his assistance to come up with a way to complete the Janus list. He was particularly excited when he discovered that Colby works closely with Charlie Eppes.
Somewhere along the line, the US gov't (DoD? DHS?) gets involved. A plan is set into motion, wherein Colby is purposely put on the Janus list.
Two years ago, it wasn't Colby who planted the Chinese bug in the cushion, it was Dwayne. Either that, or there actually was no Chinese bug to begin with. But that question opened a way for Colby to solidify his status as a traitor.
Someone on a forum somewhere commented that Ashby would have needed an accomplice to plant the bombs. I say that accomplice was Colby. That's why he was so quick to suggest that they go check out the phones--he was trying to prevent the scenario from going too far. It also gives additional weight to Ashby's comment about "everyone deserves more time." He was trying to stall as long as he could in order to give Colby a chance to down the cell towers. (Yes, with the detenation of the one bomb, he was taking a chance at killing his accomplice, but he had to keep it looking real.)
I think that the guys who were trying to get to the reporter were CIA, though they might have been hired guns from some other government. These guys were going to kill Colby and Megan and keep the reporter alive.
And with all of this . . . Colby is going to have to do something SPECTACULAR to regain Don's trust. Because even if Colby is still working for the US, he lied to Don and the rest of the team. Not only that, but he brought Don's leadership capabilities into question and forced a review of all the cases Colby worked on over the past two years . . . This is going to be one major headache for Don, both emotionally and logistically.
Also? Is it not possible that Ashby was working as a contact for the US? Something was said about Black Rain being a clearing house for intelligence info, and the CIA asked for first dibs on anything they found. So . . . perhaps Ashby was working for the CIA as well as Black Rain?
I'm also wondering if becoming a double/triple agent was Colby's penance for screwing up the earlier case involving Carter. Like the higher-ups wouldn't include it in his record if he did this for them . . .
I am quite convinced that Colby didn't know anything about Carter's connection to the Chinese until he discovered it in "The Mole." Or if he did, Carter didn't know he knew. Because iirc, the scene they played where Colby went to Dwayne first was done in private. They had no one to convince of anything, other than to face each other. So that conversation wouldn't have been part of a cover for Don & Co.'s benefit.
Also, it's been pointed out to me that Dwayne's crime was handing over the names of federal witnesses to the Chinese. When Dwayne said in TJL that he was a better friend than Colby gave him credit for, I'm inclined to think that it is because the Chinese would have paid good money for Colby's name (for whatever reason), and Dwayne did not sell it to them.
You can bet I'll be watching Colby carefully if I review the eps this summer.
My brain hurts . . .
