feliciakw: (Jensen promo)

To keep me busy between now and Thursday, I pulled out Jensen's season of Smallville (the only season I own or have even seen any part of), and I've come to some conclusions.

First, I think I mentioned a long while back that when I discovered Jane Seymour was playing Jensen's mother, I was very impressed. Although I'm not a "fan," Jane Seymour has always left me with a positive vibe. I first saw her when I was a child watching the original Battlestar Galactica. She played Serena, Boxy's widowed mother who fell in love with and married Apollo (and shortly thereafter, gets killed). I've never been able to bring myself to watch Somewhere In Time, but I've always heard good things about it. My Aunt J2 was a fan of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. But what really impressed me was when Ms. Seymour was part of our public library's speaker series when I worked at the PAC. She seemed to genuinely enjoy her time with her audience, and she was a very interesting person to listen to. She was having such a good time talking to the audience and answering questions, in fact, that she ran over her allotted hour and we kind of had to pull her from the stage.

And as Jensen said at a con a while back, she's an older woman, and she played his mother, but . . . I believe his exact words were . . . "damn, is she sexy." She seems to be aging gracefully, and I hope I age as well.

So when I was speeding through SV (because really? The show holds zero interest for me, though some of the actors turned in good performances, and I rather liked some of the supporting characters), I'd watch Jensen's stuff, of course, and Jane's. And when they were on screen together? I really liked the interaction between the actors.

Now, the interaction between the characters? That's another story.

It would have been a completely different show, and far more disturbing, if they'd actually delved into the Oedipal/Norman Bates thing they had going. And I noticed this time around how well Jensen plays the sweet, loving, devoted boyfriend who starts going off the deep end when his overbearing, possessive mother comes to town. And at the end? Jason is downright unhinged. The first time I saw it, I thought it was a little over the top (and I still think killing Jason with a chunk of meteor is overdoing it a wee bit), but watching it through this time, watching her manipulate him, and watching him fall back into that overbearing relationship . . . It could have been really fascinating (and, like Norman Bates, it would have strayed into psychological horror, which was not what the show was about).

So, I guess my point is, I really liked watching Jensen and Jane work together, and they made a disturbing storyline interesting without being blatantly disgusting about it. Because the hints and innuendo and manipulation are far more interesting.

Yes, Jensen has said that he was originally signed for 2 seasons, but then this other WB gig came up.

Maybe I'll put Somewhere In Time on my Netflix queue

Do see Somewhere in Time! It's very beautiful and romantic and mind bendy if you are into Time Travel Tales (which you know *I* am!) And young Christopher Reeve *sighs*

I never watched Smallville either (except for the episode that had Christopher Reeve! HA!) A 2 season Oedipal/Norman Bates story arch... wonder where that might have gone. But squashed by meteor is a bit harsh! Just 'cause your actor gets a different gig about some brother dudes hunting monsters or something- eh that'll never go anywhere.

I DID watch Gilmore Girls and when Jared's character had to be written out (because of this monster fighting gig) they pretty much just turned him into a a bitter whiny brat who decided to grab up his ball and go home in a snit never to darken anyone's door again. A character assassination as it were... but better than getting squashed by a meteor? Mayhaps...mayhaps.
And yes, I desperately need to get by own dang LJ account but until then... LEDERHOSEN!
