[livejournal.com profile] kalquessa just posted her ep reviews of SPN eps "A Very Supernatural Christmas" through "Mystery Spot." At one point, she makes the following observation:

Jensen Ackles can give you three pages of dialog by moving nothing but his left ear,

Truer words are rarely written.

Which sort of leads me (not really) to the promised update on the progress of the Project Still Life Recap.

How the heck did I do this when I was in film studies class?

Went to the LoC yesterday and started/continued taking notes on the Pilot. Got part-way through Act II before my brain started going kinda mushy from toggling/scanning back and forth through the conversations. Found an interesting discrepancy between this final/master edit and the version that's posted to YouTube. (A bit of--I think important--dialogue is missing from a scene in this one.) Will go back tomorrow to continue the note-taking.

For clarification of my approach, here's how I plan on doing this:

1. Watch the ep for entertainment and story content. Basically, watch it undistracted so I can appreciate the story, dialogue, and most importantly, Jensen's performance.

2. Watch again for note-taking, summarizing, and transcription (which I have a feeling I'll be doing a lot of, because there's no substitute in some cases).

3. Post the entry (or entries, depending on how long these write-ups run).

Thus far, my notes have been all over the place, from paraphrased description of what's going on and what's being said, to script-like transcription with initials indicating characters and screenplay-like establishing descriptions (Exterior, Morgan home, Night).

To sort of get a feel about how you all might get more out of this, I'll ask . . . do you want my "raw" notes as quickly as possible, or do you want some semblance of a cleaned up version? I hesitate to get all prose-y on you, as if I were writing this out like an actual story, and I'm not inserting my own commentary at this point. (My commentary or meta doesn't really mean anything unless there's a common ground for us to reference and since I can't really say to you all, "Okay, the scene where Max says A, B, & C, I think he means D, E, & F.") So, let me know if you have a preference, and I'll take it into consideration.

And in other news . . . Jensen is an excellent actor. And not too hard to look at, either.

I'm so excited about your project! I loved the pilot, and curse FOX for disregarding something THIS good. I'll take it any way you want to give it to me. I can't wait to find out what happens to the Morgan family next. Thank for doing this!

Any way you want to put it out. If it's easier for you to wait until you can get everything organized for each episode, I'll be happy to wait.

Kalquessa is right, that boy does some amazing non-verbal acting. :)

I have no preference, but I will say that I am inspired and filled with awe by the level of OCD-ness you're bringing to this project. It's a thing of beauty. And I'm looking forward to recaps.

Whatever's easiest for you, I'd like to read any of it. No particular hurry, how many years old is it already, but maybe if you decide later you don't have time to clean it up, post the first drafts anyhow. I agree with you regarding transcription, I always end up with more of that than I expect whenever I write recaps - and even more when I really like the actor.
