Okay, so Halloween has a lot of controversy surrounding it. But I grew up in a time where it was one of the best holidays on the calendar. The costumes, the candy, the cartoons, the scary . . . It's a good day for me.

I haven't said anything because I wanted to actually have a first day on the new job before I posted anything. Today was my first day as the new administrative assistant for the State Theater Foundation. Woo hoo!!!! While it's pretty much like any other office job, it will give me the opportunity to get to know the movers and the shakers in the community, the players, the plans, and how things work. It will also be a job with regular hours, weekends free (for now), and a larger paycheck.

I'm going to continue at The Cameleer until after the holidays, because I cannot in good conscience leave right before the busiest retail season of the year. Come January, we'll revisit the situation.

And speaking of The Cameleer, I helped pass out candy this evening. Culpeper has a downtown trick-or-treating for the kids, and I and one of my co-workers did the honors of passing out the candy. I wore my "Edward Gorey" widow's costume (some people call it a "black widow" costume, some call it a weeping widow, one little girl told me I was a witch), and I used one of our puppets to pass out the candy. Some of the little ones loved the puppet, some were suspicious, but all were fascinated. It was fun passing out candy. It's the first time I've done that . . . ever, I think.

Some really fun costumes, too. Wednesday and Morticia Addams were out walking the werewolf. One family had an infant penguin, a toddler Robin, dad was Batman, and mom was the Joker. Hah! One girl was a restaurant table with a plate of spagetti and meatballs. My co-worker loved the Scarlet O'Hara costume that went by. We also saw the whole Scooby Gang (the real one, not the Buffy one). There were little Draculas and lots of Disney princesses. And some bigger kids I suspect decided at the last minute to come. Oh! And there was a little OSU Buckeye cheerleader! Go Bucks! It was an entertaining evening, and the newspaper photogs spent an inordinate amount of time photographing us. I imagine I'll end up in the newspaper someplace. Great. :-P

Happy Halloween!

Halloween has always been a very American holiday to me -- we really don't do the "Trick or Treat" stuff here very much. I've had trick-or-treaters call at my door exactly once in the last ten years. I wasn't prepared then, but they struck it big, since I gave unto them from my stash of Lindor balls. This year I was prepared (a bag of mini Milky-Way bars) but nobody came. That's okay, I can add the Milky-Way bars to my "doled out one at a time" chocolate stash.

The only places in Australia where it's a big thing are near US Naval bases...
