Is "Hookman" the first time we hear about specifically salting and burning a body to get rid of a ghost?

I believe so. Also the shooting of a ghost with rocksalt - Dean shot the ghost in the pilot, but that couldn't have been rocksalt, because it broke the window.

Of course, what I know about shotguns you can put in a thimble and make a maraca out of it.

You're absolutely right about the rock salt. Using rock salt in a shotgun was new to Sam, and Dean replied that you don't have to be a college graduate to be a genius. My personal canon is that it's something Dean came up with while Sam was at Stanford.

In the pilot, Dean shot the ghost with a pistol. *nods* No salt.
