One of the movies Geo requested for Christmas was Logan's Run. And since it's been kinda on my brain for a few months (I won't get into why), I obliged. We watched it tonight.

This movie was released to the theaters, but I saw it on TV when I was a young lass. I don't remember specifics overall, but I do remember the crystals in the palm, Carousel, and "renewal" on your 30th b-day. (I even made a comment when I turned 30 that if I were in Logan's Run, it'd be time for me to renew.) This movie is where I learned what an ankh is. I remember the bright colors. I remember Farrah Fawcett-Majors being in it briefly. And I remember as a child finding it rather dull except for the aforementioned elements.

As an adult, things are different.

Made in 1976, shot in Dallas, Texas, the movie holds up pretty well. The effects are a bit dated, but not what you'd call laughable. They were state-of-the-art for their day. Geo likes to think of this movie as the last installment of "old school" sci-fi filmmaking, with Star Wars being the advent of the new sci-fi. HD viewing will show some of the tricks to the effects (which is why I lean toward seeing a movie in its original format whenever possible), but overall, it's not really that distracting.

The costume design for certain scenes is appropriately and amusingly 70s risque, and there are glimpses (and more than glimpses) of nudity that one would probably expect to see in a movie of this type from the 70s. The set design included many shiny, mirrored surfaces that Geo commented probably drove the cinematographer insane.

The story, however, is really kinda rich and will make you think. I've not read the book, and of course I approach things from a certain point of view, but this movie fits, I think, very well into that viewpoint. The world teaches us one thing, but life can be so much more fulfilling--and challenging--if we dare to look beyond. (I'll get more specific if anyone is interested.)

There are one or two points that are a wee bit confusing if you're not paying attention, and I wonder if there's information in the book that would clear it up. I might have to read the book in the coming year.

And as an aside, I think Jensen would make a fantastic Logan 5. Technically, he's a few years older than the character should be (the character is closer to Jared's age), but I'd love to see Jensen play the part.

In other news, Geo put Stargate the movie in the DVD player immediately following, and dang but that is a good movie. No preamble or beating around the bush. Just strap in and hold on to keep up with the story.
