First of all, Geo opted not to take Dean's tape case to the thrift shop. Apparently, there was some pretty cool stuff in it.

So for the drive to Ohio, we took Geo's car, which only has a radio/tape deck combo. No CD player. He packed Dean's tape case--yes, it is now officially designated as Dean's Tape Case--and played some of its contents. Including two Led Zepplin tapes, Houses of the Holy and . . . something else. One of their latest albums--copyright 1979 (?)--I guess.

Keep in mind that the only thing I know of Zepplin is "Stairway to Heaven."

This? Totally not what I was expecting of Led Zepplin. I was excepting something . . . much harder. More rockin' (and don't get me wrong, some of it did truly rock), but instead I got . . . what the frell???? That sounds almost reggae! In flavor, anyway. And that one? That's, like, borderline Southern rock. *blink, blink* Billy Joel? Okay, I know the vocal isn't Billy Joel, but the melody and instrumentation? Could so be Billy Joel.

"Is this typical of Zepplin?" I ask Geo.

Geo kinda smirks and says, "There's no such thing as 'typical' Zepplin."

I will say that one of the songs on Houses of the Holy fascinated me in a very rockin' yet completely-missing-the-last-sixteenth-note-of-the-phrase kind of way. 'Cause whilst I was jamming to the song, I kept goin' "How the heck do you count out that time signature? Where'd that last sixteenth go???"

I might have to check out some early-early Zepplin to see how it compares. Based on song titles, I think maybe the older stuff is somewhat harder than the later stuff. I have no idea. Geo says they did a lot of ballads.

But Dean? You know, you hate my Huey Lewis, and I'm not too fond of Ratt, but I think we could maybe learn to agree on Zepplin.
