So. I'm in the office by myself today, and I've been watching con clips while I'm writing up the minutes from last week's meeting. And I found this particular clip to hold an interesting tidbit of information. The section timestamped 0:45 - 2:00.

I found it very interesting (and somewhat encouraging, though I know that sounds silly) that all three guys--Jensen, Jared, and Misha--resisted the whoopee cushion gag in "I Believe the Children . . ." I love that they were approaching it from a scene dynamic POV, as actors who know what they're doing would do. I love that they're invested in the scene and know their stuff and their characters and are willing to call Kripke and basically say, "Dude. This isn't gonna work." And it stands to reason that they'd be professional enough to do as they're told once they've spoken their piece. (I've been in that same situation, but that's a completely different story.)

I'm also not surprised that Kripke insisted on keeping it, and that once they guys started shooting it, they had trouble because they were laughing so much. It's such a juvenile, "guy" gag. I'd be surprised if something from shooting that scene didn't make it into the gag reel next year.

Mos def.

I'm actually quite surprised they all resisted that scene. Pretty cool, but still surprised. They're all such big dorks. Who knew?

Yes, but they're big dorks who take their jobs and their roles seriously. :-) I'm delighted that they felt so strongly about the dynamic and flow of the scene that they called Kripke on his tomfoolery. Because really, that gag serves no purpose whatsoever than to be a cheap laugh.

But because they are such dorks, they ended up laughing so hard they had problems shooting the scene. Which also doesn't surprise me in the least. I remember commenting something to the effect of "I wonder how long it took them to shoot that."

It actually made me feel good to hear that because my response to it was a disgusted "what good did thatdo, other than be stupid?"

But producer is boss and boss is boss no matter how stupid. . .

And of course, being guys, they'd start laughing. "It's a guy thing," as Jack would say to me sometimes.

Is it wrong that scene entertained me? Mostly it was Castiel's straight face, and yeah, I'd love to know how many takes it took Misha to keep that in place.

Yeah, it made me feel better, too. Possibly because it told me that the actors and I were on the same wavelength about how well it fit into the scene or what it added to the scene, which . . . was not much.

But, yeah, I can totally see it all going down like Misha described, because they're getting paid to do a job, and after all, they are guys.

No, it's not wrong. I'm sure it entertained a lot of people. And seeing everyone play the scene was pretty funny.

But I've never found whoopee cushions in and of themselves to be particularly funny, and it just didn't really fit into the flow of the scene, except for the incongruity of it. *shrug*

I'm just tickled that the actors and I were on the same wavelength about it. But when it all comes down to it, Kripke, Jared, Jensen, and Misha are all guys. It surprises me not at all that they all found it to be hilarious. Because guys never really grow up. :-)
