This had some stuff that I really kinda liked. The villain, for example. And the case. Good stand-alone. And the fact that the baddies didn't take advantage of everyone. And I figured the lady witch wanted them to beat the guy witch (warlock? wizard? I didn't hear either of those terms in this ep . . . ) was because she was ready to die.

I liked Bobby's story arc in this one, too.

And Sam at the poker game.

My biggest issue with this ep was . . .

*

. . . Wait for it . . .

*

*

*

Missing Jensen. Not that the ep didn't play well, but some of those scenes, especially Bobby's confession, I just thought, dang, I wish Jensen was playing this scene with them.

Gleeful!Dean always amuses me. And I loved Dean and Bobby's exchange at the end.

And Dean is going to start watching what he eats? That should be entertaining.

All in all, a good ep. Not as good as S1 and S2 stuff (which has become my yard stick recently), but an ep that I think will grow on me bit by bit as time goes.

*nods thoughtfully*

I missed Jensen a lot. When he was on screen there was tension and layers with him out all that was gone.
And i'm curious what was the purpose of the ep again? Because we again didn't learn anything useful other than that Sam is awesome and i'm tired of that shoving down my throat.

Wow. I don't think the show has "shoved" Sam down our throats since early season 1. I'm quite pleased with the overall character development this season, for everyone, and this ep came across (for me) as far, far more about Bobby than about either of the brothers.

On the lack of Jensen, I didn't miss him at all. I was honestly so happy he was getting time off, I just smiled and smiled. Strange reaction, I know, but I thought Chad did an awesome job channeling Jensen/Dean.

Oh, Chad did a fine job. And I'll be the last person to begrudge Jensen some well deserved downtime. It's just that there were one or two scenes where I couldn't help but think, "Gee, I'd love to see how Jensen would play this scene."

Yeah I felt that way about the Bobby confession scene too. I don't know exactly what Jensen would have done but...I know it would have been something with depth and layers.

Chad did a fine job but really there is only one Dean and that's Jensen. The finesse and energy was just missing. There is a grace in Jensen's Dean that no one else gets into him(though Ridge Canipe did manage it a little in the scene where Colin!Sam gives him the amulet). Jensen has a real gift, I truly feel that, with how he communicates as an actor via the characters.

I thought the episode was kind of cliche'd and predictable and I didn't need to be hit with another "Sam is the awesomest bestest ever in the world" anvil this season. But it had it's moments and the Bobby and Dean scene at the end was very good. Dean could have "boohoo'd" at him, like Bobby did to him but he didn't. Dean could have told him "You don't have legs? I was chained to a rack and torn apart and believe me you don't even want to know what else for 30 years with no hope of death for an escape, nothing but putting off the inevitable eternal damnation as a demon, so suck it up princess" but he was kind and gentle.

Amusingly, Dean has been played by 5 different actors, to date. Sam has been played by 3 (and that's only if you count the baby in the pilot). Jensen is certainly the best Dean, but I found the statistics there amusing.

Actually, Sam has been played by four (+) people, if you count the baby(s) in the pilot, yes?

Baby!Sam
SomethingWicked!Sam
Colin!Sam
Jared!Sam

Dean has been . . .

Fouryearold!Dean
Ridge!Dean
Brock!Dean
Chad!Dean
and of course
Jensen!Dean

I still want them to find a way to let Jensen play opposite Colin. Because that would be awesome.

Oh, you're right, I forgot that little SomethingWicked!Sam wasn't a baby version of Colin. *snerk*

I agree. And since there is only one Jensen, and it's really not fair to expect guest actors to be able to play Dean as well as Jensen does, or in the same way, I try to cut them some slack. Because really, when complaints boil down to "But the actor isn't Jensen" . . . that's really not fair.

There were so many times in this ep when I was trying to overlay in my mind how Jensen would play something. Which makes my brain hurt after a while.
