So, now that we're approximately 1/4 through S5 of SPN, I watched the 2009 Comic Con panel. I've also watched that Hitler parody thing.
And you know? All the fits I heard being thrown around in the fandom? Completely overblown. Including my own (which is one of the reasons I avoid spoilers--so I don't get overworked about something that turns out not to be worth it). Though I remain twitchy wherein Kripke's storytelling judgment is concerned (see my peeves with the most recent ep). At the point the panel was held, they were, I believe they said, finishing up the writing of 5.03, and had only plotted out as far as 5.06, which is where we are now.
I appreciate the fact that he admits to having in the past dismissed the idea of angels out of hand, then realizing that they needed a cosmic Good (my term) to counter the cosmic Evil they'd set up. I appreciate Sera Gamble making the point that they're not out to dis or elevate any one particularly religious belief (though I still get ticked when their dialogue makes no sense--see my peeves with the most recent ep).
And I'd love to ask him how his current apocalyptic mytharc (which he says is where he'd always intended on going) fits in with his original vision of the show, which was brothers traveling the by-ways of the US fighting urban legends. Because that? Was an awesomely fun aspect of the show.
I'm also delighted that he said that from the moment Ruby appeared on screen (in Mag7), she was evil. She was a demon, and you never trust demons. I just think that particular character element wasn't played to its greatest effect, for whatever reason (particularly last year. But that's an old chestnut).
I am concerned that he says there will be more meta-based eps (though maybe he only had Becky in the season opener in mind. Because seriously? Forget about the fandom and tell the story, Kripke).
I also find it interesting that Sera was the one who came up with the idea of making Chuck a prophet.
And he said that this would be the season when the brother will angstily regain their connection and come back together. Here's hoping they continue to explore the motivations and ramifications behind the reunion.
The thought occurred to me, though, as I was watching Sera and Ben interact with one another . . . When asked at a con about how much of the characters are "theirs" (meaning how "possessive" are Jared and Jensen about their characters), Jensen said that he believes Sera thinks Sam is hers, and Ben thinks Dean is his. So . . . I've come to the conclusion that I'd really like to see their names together co-writing an ep or 2-parter. We've never seen that, have we?
