This is another great, great stand-alone, with lots of fun banter, a creative case story, and a plucky guest character. I love this ep like watercolors. (Note: I know very little about art, but when I go to an art show or gallery, I'm inevitably drawn to the watercolors.)
First we have evil creepy painting that moves, people. That's just so wrong.
Then we have Dean doin' his thang at the bar while Sammy puts together a case. This case, btw, is Sammy's, beginning to end. He found it, he knows the ins and outs of the community in which it takes place, and he makes the connection. Again I notice how familiar Sam is making himself with John's journal. Sam seems to be the one with the purposeful mission, while Dean just wants to "save people and hunt things," and have fun doing it.
Also? Banter. All the way around. \o/ Dean being not-so-subtly encouraging of Sam and Sarah. Sam being exasperated with Dean. *two thumbs up*
Also also? "What kind of house doesn't have salt? Low-sodium freaks!" Plus, this is the second mention of iron, and the first mention that pure iron is a ghost deterrent.
Also x3? Smooth criminals. I love the B&E scene with the rock soundtrack. Love it. Although I notice that Sam is doing what I would perceive as Dean's job in disarming the electronics while Dean is doing Sam's job of picking the lock. This shows that they are both multi-talented and each can do what needs to be done in a pinch.
Also x4? Sam cracks me up with his surprise at the reappearance of the painting.
And let's not forget Sarah, shall we? She's my favorite of all Sam's potential love interests. She's a civilian, and scared, but brave, too, and ready to take responsibility and assist where needed. I would love for her to contact the boys next season with a case involving a weird trinket of some sort. Sam has changed a lot since they saw each other at the end of this ep, and it could be interesting to see them try to reconnect.
But regardless: "Sam? Marry that girl."
Plus, she provides the solution by way of her knowledge of antiques!
Also x5? The first appearance of a creepy little girl. (Well, a malicious creepy little girl. One of the child ghosts in the Pilot was a girl.)
I really do love this ep with a deep and tubey passion, as
kalquessa would say.
