The Benders

This? Is a very uncomfortable ep. I've never liked overtly, purposely sadistic villains, those who are cruel simply for the sake of being cruel. And this one kinda hits those buttons. *shudder*
This is, however, the first ep that had me actively seeking missing scene fic. Up until this ep, I really had no interest in hunting down any fic. But more on that in a moment.
This is a great ep for both Sammy-peril and Dean-peril. And kinda nerve-racking.
And of course all the brother interaction is great. *hearts Winchesters*
Let's see . . .
The little boy, Evan . . . if my bro and his best friend had been sibs when they were little, and they had a third brother? He would look just like that child. Evan has my bro's coloring and Bro's BF's features (big eyes, full lips, etc). Yep. I almost recognize the kid.
Winchesters in state trooper garb are not an unpleasant sight.
Love the slice of life we get at the bar, and Sam being so familiar with John's journal.
Also, have I mentioned that I love Dean's green shirt? Because I do.
Also also . . . Kathleen has amazing gray eyes. Very striking.
This is the first time we get confirmation of Dean's b-day, yes?
Also x3 . . . more insight into and point-blank declaration of the responsibility Dean feels toward Sam (as if we didn't know already *g*). Kinda makes me think that maybe John wasn't the only one checking up on Sam while he was at Stanford.
Okay, Pa Bender really creeps me out. He's disgusting and evil and just all around horrible. But you know what? When I look at it from an acting perspective? That guy is really good. I might have to check and see what else he might have been in, if he's played any normal characters, because he knocks it out of the park with the disgusting, sociopathic ick.
Geo made an interesting observation after we got done watching it last night. He said it felt like they cut a scene. That, knowing the guys who do this show, that there was probably a confrontation scene between Sam and Missy when Sam goes to the house to rescue Dean. But the network probably saw the draft and said uh-uh, because they didn't want Sam having to beat up on or knife fight with or whatever a little girl. But that it was a real shame they didn't have that scene, that Missy's part ended too abruptly, because the last we see of her is her menacing Dean with the knife, and she was such a weird, mysterious, creepy character (and obviously pregnant--eeewwwwww), and they just put her in a closet? There should have been more.
To which I replied that's exactly the reason there are so many "missing scene" fics for this ep. Because something is missing.
(In my previous fandom, it was fairly easy to get a hold of previous drafts of eps, if you knew where to look. I've not heard of draft scripts being available for SPN, though. 'Cause I'd be really interested to know if there was such a scene in an earlier draft.)
When Dean tells Sam, "If you ever go missing like that again, I'm just sayin'. I'm not lookin' for ya." Oh, Dean. Yes, you will. And he'll be gone a lot longer, and it will be much worse, and you'll get shot, and it . . . just won't be pleasant. *preemptively hugs Dean*

Date: 2009-06-16 09:27 pm (UTC)The missing scene theory is what made this the ep where I went looking for fic. Because it definitely feels like something is missing or got cut or whatever. But I'm guessing that sinces I've never heard anything about such a scene, that if there was one, it got cut out of an early draft. We'll probably never know.

As for the rest of them, maybe they're from southern Minnesota? *snerk*
