Ah! This is were we get back the Sam we had in the pilot, and the Sam we know and love through the rest of the series. The people-person Sam, who can make a connection that doesn't feel like there's a professional detachment involved.
I'll chalk the previous two detachment eps up to the shock of Jess's death. At this point, the shock has worn off, and what remains is the grief and the guilt. In fact, he kinda says as much when he admits that it's not just Jess that's giving him nightmares.
Dean, with his firm, insistent (though not rude) questioning, until he gets the furrow-browed, pursed-lips "Dude, back off" head-tilt from Sam. Sam, with his gentle, "just tell us what you saw" approach, until he asks one too many weird questions, then he's the one who gets the "are you nuts?" from the witness.
Evidence that John was proud of Sam: an outsider commenting on how John spoke of his youngest.
Dean, with the scoping girls every chance he gets.
Also? There's those pointy ponder fingers again. And Dean is in the habit of scratching the back of his head when he's confused or thinking hard. When did those habits disappear, and why?
And this is the first time we hear about demons, which are something the boys don't contend with on a regular basis. Better get used to it, guys. It only goes downhill from here.
Also, also . . . more biblical tie-ins, with numerology (for what it's worth). But they figure this demon out through Japanese lore. Interesting, in retrospect.
It's interesting how much Sam doesn't know about his brother. First, it was that Dean gets along with kids (or at least, kids he can relate to). Now, it's that Dean has a phobia about flying. And you gotta love that Sam is willing to do the job alone, but Dean won't let him.
Sam's dismissal of Dean's homemade EMF: early on, it played as funny, with Dean's cocky pride and Sam bringing him down a notch or two. In retrospect? Ouch.
The boys (and the actors?) are starting to settle into their roles and relationship, and we get our first taste that demons were involved with the thing with Jess. Though at this point in time, it just as easily reads that the demon latched onto Sam's weakness to through him off his game.
Ah, the salad days of S1.
