I think I've figured out one of the things they did to make Mary look not her glowy, mom-like self. Watch the scene with her and Sam. I think they arched one of Samantha Smith's eyebrows to give her a slightly . . . sinister . . . look. It seems they shoot her at a slight angle through much of the scene (also giving the impression of the off-ness of the visitation), and it's a little hard to tell, but when her face is relaxed, it looks like her right eyebrow has an arch to it. Interesting . . .

[livejournal.com profile] whitemartyr, yes, they shot DT-Dean with a strange lens. I'm never sure what kind of lens they use to get different effects, but I'm tempted to say it's a wide angle lens. I could be wrong, though. I'll have to check with Geo.

In other news, Young!Sam with yellow eyes is still creepy and disturbing and not right

Um . . . well, I don't think I'll be able to compare shot-for-shot, because the slightly distorted shot was not shot with a standard lens.

But for example, a wide angle lens is like when you look through the eye hole in a hotel door. Everything looks really warped and curved, but you can see way more than if you were looking through the eye hole through a standard piece of glass.

Focal lengths and focal points differ, and my guess is that the shot they used for when Dean is really getting up in Sam's face has a . . . um . . . shorter? . . . focal length in comparison to other wide angle lenses.

This isn't really something I've read up on since my film production classes many, many moons ago. I hope that kind of helps.
