Yesterday at the grocery checkout, the cashier asked started to ask, "Paper or . . . " until she saw our reusable bags. "Were you going to ask us, 'Paper or plastic?'" I said. "I haven't heard that in eons!" And yes, indeed, there were the paper bags at the end of the line. I'm thrilled! Could it be that the tide is changing and that the grocery bag gods are starting to realize that paper is actually, you know, biodegradable? Less likely to entangle and choke wildlife if it escapes in the wind? Better for the planet, maybe? I'm tickled.

L.A. just passed a law where plastic bags are no longer even offered at any store (they'll wrap your meat at the butcher counter), and paper bags cost ten cents per.

It's one way to encourage the use of reusable bags, but bad timing; all of ours got put into storage and we still don't have them out. Ah well. Buying some more...

I am laughing wryly at how mentalities shift. In the past . . . eh . . . 20 years, it's gone from nothing but paper or "paper or plastic" to nothing but plastic--because it's better for the environment, you know. Now we've got all the plastic bags being blown about, into the ocean, choking the wildlife, and paper is finally apparently coming back. I'm of the opinion it never should have left. Heck, sometimes I want to go to Trader Joe's just because I need paper bags.

You might or might not remember, but back in the day, we used paper bags to make book covers for our school books. We were required to cover our school books, and that was the way you did it. (Then you could decorate your book cover however you wanted.)

You need market bags? Hm . . . *shuffles info away for future usage . . . *
