First, allow me to state the obvious. Ty Olsson's eyes are so incredibly, strikingly crystal blue that they should probably have a warning label or something.
What did I particularly like about the ep?
"Do you mind if I take the Tolberone?"
"What do you mean, 'personal'?"
"Did you have a stroke? Vocabulary. 'Personal'."
I really enjoyed the dynamic going between Sam and Dean in this ep. I know a lot of people don't like it, don't like them fighting, but I found this episode to be, actually, understandable. They're both incredibly frustrated and sniping at each other. Then Dean gets a call from Benny, and Sam is totally thrown that Dean has "personal crap" to take care of. Dean needs to go help a friend, while Sam's freak-out level escalates as the ep progresses.
Benny whistling "Hall of the Mountain King" while he and Dean fight their way out of monsters.
The flashbacks. The dynamic between Dean, Benny, and Cas in the flashbacks. Poor Dean, once again playing referee between two arguing parties.
Love the way Dean and Benny communicate, both during a fight, and as encouragement, with a tap to the back or a clap on the shoulder.
"I drink blood. I don't drink people."
That Benny finds value in human life.
I enjoyed seeing some of what Sam was doing, too. How he connects to people even when he's a drifter, as opposed to Amelia (I'm still a little suspicious of that chick).
The juxtaposition between the gritty way the Purgatory flashbacks are shot/treated and the colorful soft-focus way Sam's flashbacks are shot/treated.
I liked Dean getting a look at Benny's truck, sort of sussing out how Benny lives (or, you know, "doesn't live," since he's, you know, undead).
Lovelovelove the phone conversation, with Sam chewing Dean out for taking on a vamp nest alone, and Dean telling Sam he's got back up, and
"I get the separative lives thing, but this is a hunting thing--"
"Stop talking! I'm sending you my 20."
Also, we never found out why Sam called Dean to begin with.
I enjoyed getting some of Benny's backstory. However, I'm also interested in his backstory pre-turning.
Loved Sam sussing that Benny is a vamp, and his (not so) subtle move for his machete, and Dean telling him to stand down with ever so slight of a shake of his head. There's gonna be some 'splaining that needs to be done.
Also, I have a theory. I think that Cas and Benny agreed that when the time came, Cas would let go and not try to leave Purgatory. Both Cas and Benny know that Dean can't get out if he tries to take Cas through, and so they agree that Dean gets through. Benny is hitching a ride, of course, but I think by the time they get to the portal, it's agreed between the two of the supernatural creatures that the human gets out, regardless. It's possible, I think that Cas even initiates the conspiracy, pulling Benny aside and telling him his plan to let go, and it's Benny's responsibility to make sure that Dean gets through.
Just a theory, might not amount to anything, but there ya go.
I'm looking forward to the brothers' hashing things out next week. Here's hoping that some of the air gets cleared.
