I've been re-reading the stuff I posted last year, and I'm wondering: Where did my squee go? Has my mind not been on the eps as I re-watch them? Has S5 stolen some of the magic? Am I just too familiar with my fave eps, having re-watched them many times, that I've stopped seeing new things?

One thing I noticed this time around was that when Dean wakes up skipping the veil, the first person he calls for is Sam. Not Dad. Sam. Dad is second. Traveling with Sam for the past year, unable to reach John even from Lawrence, even when Dean was dying . . . Dean has always trusted John and followed his orders without question. But the past year has shown him that Sam is the one actively looking out for him and supporting him. Hm . . .

Something that did come to me as YED told John he needed to "sweeten the pot" . . . I thought to myself, "Ah! You want John's soul because you're hoping he'll be the 'righteous man' who breaks the first seal."

I'm finding the first couple (and three) seasons to be a disconnect from S5. I'm finding that I'm having trouble watching these early seasons as part of the same continuous arc that concluded with S5. Maybe that will change by the time I actually get to S5, but right now, I'm not seeing where S5 was all that informed by S1 or S2. And I have a huge problem imagining Chuck writing any of this stuff in his books. As I'm in the midst of S1/S2, the idea of Chuck just . . . doesn't thrill me. I mean, it's cute, and it's fun, but it also feels almost like a parallel universe, if that makes any sense.

Anyway, there ya go. The show has come a long way from the point I'm watching now, and these early seasons seem like a different life.

You know what I liked about the early shows? They were chock full of twists that made sense and kept you guessing. In those early days, the baddie or the outcome was almost never what you'd most expect. For example. Haunted Painting! It's the creepy Dad! It's the creepy Dad... nope it's the little girl! Or Oh no! A damsel in distress! Her head gets chopped! But wait! She's a vampire! And creepy guy smoking in corner hunts vampires! He's our pal! But wait... the vamps are NICE! And our new pal is CRAZY!

Always kept you on your toes! I can't think of any Season Five episodes that really did that. Most of the twists came so out of leftfield that rather than cheering the revealation you were left going "Buh?" The Trickster is Gabriel? Buh? The amulet finds God? Buh? Except... it never does... Buh Buh? And the thing that saves the day in the end is.... Random Green Army Man in Ashtray that's Never been mentioned before Now? Well that's the BUH?!?!? heard 'round the world!

Still, Season 5 didn't kill the show for me. Just wasn't one of their best. And for me it doesn't take away any of the charm or the squee of the early episodes. But then... I squee pretty easy. :-)!

You're right on things. I feel the same - S1-S3 and even S4 is one ligical (more or less) story and S5 (i mean S5 after The End) looks like a different show.

I know that my 22 parts review of 522 is tantamount to a trek through the desert with no water for 40 years, but once I got to the end of it, it felt like it all wrapped together pretty nicely... that might just be me? *bounces for you to read it so I can discuss it with your wicked cool brain*

Hee. Thanks. Um. Well, considering that it might be a while before I get to the end of S5 (I do intend to get through the entire series before S6 begins), but when I do, I'll read through it.

Twenty-two parts, you say? Oy! That's a lot of meta.

But you have SEEN them all, right? You're doing a marathon? Man, I wanna do that again, too.

Show is so very full of meta that my eyeballs were floating by the time I was done with 522... and then I went and spelled some things out even more in the comments. I think people are afraid of me now, and not in a good way. LOL

Oh, yes, I've seen the entire series. I've done a marathon for the past couple of summers. And as a season is added each year, it gets harder to get through the entire series before September. Heh.

Last year, I did a review for each ep in S1 (tagged as S1 in my tag list), if you're interested. Not having done that this year, I think I'll be more inclined to do S2 this year. I've already got a start.
