I've been pondering Dean's heaven memories in the context of family vis-a-vis Sam's heaven memories. I've already talked about how Sam's heaven memories are of being part of a normal family, and independence.
And I think I mentioned how Dean's heaven memories are of family and giving Sam something John had forbidden, and taking care of his mom. But it's more elaborate than that. Dean gives Sam something that's normal--brothers shooting off 4th of July fireworks together. He's providing for his family, providing something (as I said before) that John wouldn't. And Sam is truly grateful for it.
And with Mary, again, providing something--comfort--that John wouldn't. Even at that tender age, trying to be there for his family, provide some small measure of safety. And Mary returns the affection.
Sam's heaven memories are of normal and independence. Dean's heaven memories are of providing for his family--and being recognized and appreciated for it. I've mentioned before that I think, to a certain extent, Dean needs to be needed. That's part of the reason, I think, his heaven memories are what they are. They are of him providing for his family when no one else would or could, and receiving affection and appreciation in return.
Oh, Dean.
