What can I say about this ep?

Sam and Dean! Dean and Sam! \o/

"We're your fraternity brothers from Ohio." \o/

Brothers doing research! \o/

Brother banter! \o/

Rock salt shotgun shells \o/

Campfire ghost story complete with "Aren't you glad you didn't turn on the light?"! \o/

Re: the rock salt shotgun shells . . . I pointed this out in my trivia post last year. The rock salt shells were something John and Dean (mostly Dean *g*) came up with while Sam was at Stanford. "You don't have to be a college graduate to be a genius." *hearts smart!Dean*

Also? "Dude, I'm Matlock!"

Also also? "You've been holding out on me about this college gig. This is awesome!"

Also x3? Dean knowing he has a corpse to unearth when he'd rather be playing pool with a leggy blonde. He's so cute when he pouts.

You know? I can't remember them ever bringing up the smell of ozone in connection with a spirit after this ep. Wonder why.

Now, this is also the first ep that started to send up my alarms. As soon as they brought in the "immoral preacher" angle, my first thought was, "Oh, great. Here we go with trashing religious people and the church." However, the way they played it out, I can go along with it, because in the case of Lori's dad, there actually are preachers and others in roles of leadership who do that kind of thing. It's not good. It's not acceptable. And it's sad to see a leader fall like that. But it happens. I've known people to whom it has happened.

The whole thing about teaching punishment without forgiveness is a whole 'nother can of worms I won't get into here. And the spirit was just plain evil.

This is also our first look at Sam's not being ready to move forward romantically after Jess, and Dean's concern over lack of willingness to move on. Dean's willing to stay in town if Sam wants to. And he does so without the wink-wink-nudge-nudge lewdness. But no. Sam's not ready, and Dean won't push.

Plus? Awesome practical effects and creepy CGI effects. Simple. Understated. And creepy.

Upon first watch back in 2007, this was not a favorite. It took me a long time to re-watch. But upon re-watch? There's a lot of good stuff in this one!
