SPN 5.06 - Initial impressions
Oct. 15th, 2009 09:58 pmHm . . . not real sure how I feel about this one.
Given the "Then" clips that they used, I think maybe we'll see a little bit of a struggle somewhere down the line with the boys adjusting to their newly equal partnership.
The case started out pretty interesting (if somewhat eyeroll-y in parts. I with the eyeroll-y and Geo with the bwah). Geo and I were chuckling along with the absurdity of it, and the banter, and the usual Winchester brother-ness.
Then we got to Jesse, and his mom, and the backstory, and . . . it kinda started heading south.
I don't even know if I'm gonna mention some of the things that twigged me with this one, not only on a personal level, but on something of a continuity level.
The one good thing that came out of this is that we've established that Sam is not the anti-Christ. Finally.
It just . . . seems that the more they develop the mytharc, the more convoluted it becomes.
I'll need to think on it more, but I think what bothers me about the kid is that it feels like the mytharc is getting too unwieldy and out of control. I've never really enjoyed convoluted mytharcs to begin with (the mytharc eps were my least favorite of the X-Files eps), so it just feels like the more they add, the less interested I am in the additions. *shrug*
Also, demon children. I've never particularly liked demon-spawn stories.
So I guess my first reaction is that I really enjoyed the first half, but I'm extremely skeptical of the second half. And I'm very skeptical of the addition of Jesse to the whole thing.
But what I really want to know is whether or not it was Jensen's idea to do the "froze that way" face. 'Cause that just seems so "Jensen."

Date: 2009-10-16 05:03 pm (UTC)It's like I'm trying to watch a movie, and Kripke is sitting behind me talking to someone. Something mildly irritating, that I can try to shut out or ignore, but eventually, I'm afraid I'm going to snap and have to turn around and tell him to shut up. It's not something I want to do. I want to sit back and enjoy the movie. But if he keeps annoying me, I'll either have to slap him or remove myself from the theater. (And since the movie is actually his, that only leaves me with one option.)
This has happened before with favorite shows. The mythos or backstory or whatever takes a sharp turn off the deep end, and I stop watching. It happened with ST:TNG. It happened with Xena. If it weren't for Michael Hurst, it might have happened with Hercules. I never got into Buffy, and I don't think I've seen any eps of Angel, and the reason I didn't want X-Files in first run was that I'm not too keen on alien abduction stories, and the pilot ep was all alien abduction. (I have since watched the entire series on borrowed DVDs.) I'm actually surprised that they've been able to hold out this long without losing my interest, and I credit a lot of that to Jensen, Jared, and the various directors (Kim Manners being at the top of that list).
But this ep just . . . meh. Hit me the wrong way on several of my overall peeves (not just for SPN, but peeves in general). As I said, I liked the first half, could have done without the mytharc connection in the second half.

I think Bill and I had the exact same reaction to the exact same bit of episode. *facepalm* Oh, Show, you just had to go there, didn't you?
