It's entirely possible that it's the color correction and/or filters that are highlighting the shadows around his eyes. But I'd also believe that it was the make-up used, because different make-up looks different through different filters and corrections. Whatever the cause, I find that his eyes seem more shadowed during the darker scenes.

I'm actually really impressed with the realism with which they do their trauma-type make-up. Though I guess that's probably one of the most common effects in TV and film, so the industry has had decades of practice.
