I don't think Sam's "addiction" is going to be able to become non-existent in the story. It's going to provide the basis and the foundation for the brother's "final confrontation," I think.
That's just speculation on my part, but, yeah. Sam's powers and whether or not he should use them have been an issue too long for the matter to just disappear.
