Well, there ya go! Thanks for answering! :-)

That's very odd, in a way, because someone told me that it was mentioned in an interview (or maybe it was based on fan research?) that when blocking things out, they (the director?) made a special effort to put Dean in the bed closest to the door. That would mean that it was more than just fanon.

Of course, since I can't actually verify the info, it's not really that valuable or accurate.

That the first time we see Sam take the bed closest to the door is in "Dead in the Water" is very interesting. That's very early days.

And though they seem to switch off, it also seems that the bed closest to the door more often goes to Dean. That, to me, almost makes it what I call "extrapolated fanon." It's fanon, but it's not just randomly made up fanon. It's extrapolated from clues given in the show. I say "almost" because obviously Sam does take the bed closest to the door from time to time.

This is the kind of stuff I was looking for when I was re-watching the series this season. How did I miss all of that? (Well, in DinW, I was being amused by Dean checking on how his clothes smelled. I think it was DinW . . . Anyway . . . )

Thanks!
