Okay, you might be reading this later in a separate post, but I gotta get it out now.
I'm a little perturbed that so many, many people insist that Dean is a warrior only. Let me see if I can explain.
Dean has never wanted "normal." He's always been a hunter. But he's wanted a family, too. He's a protector, and if he weren't a hunter, he'd be a firefighter (or a cop, or a soldier). All are dangerous jobs, and all certainly have the potential to include a family. Dean has never said he wanted "normal," but he confessed under the spell of Veritas that he wanted a family. Part of me still wishes he could have made it work with Lisa.
Sam, otoh, has always wanted "normal" and "safe." His idea of "normal" and "safe" is a wife, a college education, holiday dinners, etc. (I find it interesting that his version of apple pie is a dog rather than a child, while Dean's included a son.)
Now, each of the boys have had a go at "normal." Sam wants his back. Dean gave his up. The big difference? Dean knew what his brother was going through at the time. He never forgot, and even when he gave up looking, it was still with him every day.
Sam, otoh, turned his back and walked away. As far as we know right now, he wasn't worried about Dean. It didn't haunt him. He had no ties to his past. At all.
In that regard, I think they both want the same thing, to an extent. Dean recognizes that he's at his best when hunting. He's always known this, but that doesn't mean he doesn't (or didn't) want a family, too.
Where they differ is that Sam wants "normal" and to leave hunting. Perhaps he wants "easy," too. (Firefighters, cops, soldiers all have a LOT of challenges in holding together a family life.)
Anyway, I think I'm going to have to stop reading the boards. It's just too depressing to see so many people complaining while at the same time rejoicing in the disregard for a part of Dean that I actually really liked and could relate to. A part that might be gone forever.
