Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd.
His skin was pale and his eye was odd.
He shaved the faces of gentlemen
Who never thereafter were heard of again.
He trod a path that few have trod,
Did Sweeney Todd,
The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

~From "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd"

This is, as yet, my only must-see holiday movie this year. Not very Christmas-y, I'll grant you that, but I'm so eager to see this flick I can almost taste it (erm . . . pun intended?).

The latest review

PBS's site for the play

I was in a production of Sweeney Todd back in 1995 (while I was planning a wedding, no less), and it was, without a doubt, one of the best overall theater experiences I've ever had. The show is fantastic! You might call it a horror musical; I call it a morality play.

When deciding whether or not to audition for the show, I watched a borrowed laser disc of the PBS Great Performances of the show, starring Angela Lansbury and George Hearn. By the end of Act I, I was folded up in the back of the couch thinking, "How on earth can I audition for this show? It's horrible!*" By the end of Act II, I was folded up in the back of the couch thinking, "How on earth can I not audition for this show? It's FANTASTIC!"

I need a theater icon. I also need more icon space.

*Horrible here meaning "morbid and disgusting and grotesque and how could I lend my name to a show featuring cannibalism."
