I tried the Anne Rice books but just couldn't get into them. Never read Dracula, either. The Sookie ones are a lot lighter, IMO. Fun books. But of course you have to like the Sookie character or all is lost. I also read the Anita Blake Vampire executioner series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Those are a little more intense than Sookie but if you like Anita she'll suck you in. If you haven't tried those you should also start from the beginning because she does continue the underlying plot and characters. Let me know if you do try the Sookie book and if you like it.
