Coincidence or homage?
Jan. 16th, 2008 08:27 pmSo. Geo and I gave the new Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles a try. It's new on Fox, and it's much better than another recent attempt we made at a new genre show this season, Flash Gordon.
T:TSCC follows T2. John is 15, and as in T2, Sarah and her son are on the run from a terminator that has been sent back in time to kill teen!John. Also, as established in T2, a protector terminator is sent to protect teen!John. This protector terminator is played by . . .
Summer Glau. Excellent! (You know, I would totally love to see her on SPN. But I digress.) Every time she gets into a knock-down drag-out with the evil terminator, I'm all "Give it up. She wasted an entire ship full of Reavers. You're toast, dude."
So anyway. In one scene, John is looking at an article about his alleged death 8 years prior (time travel, you know). And the name of the FBI agent who was/is pursuing the Connors? Special Agent James Ellison. Hu-bu-WHA? Geo caught that, replayed the scene, and stilled on the frame revealing the name. When I realized what I was reading, I just went "hu-bu-WHA?"
But wait. There's more.
John's current fake identity has him hailing from . . .
Lawrence, Kansas. SPN fans know the significance there.
In other random "Hey, I know him!"s, Tony Amendola (aka Master Bra'tac) had a role in the second ep.
So, my fannish brain was rather tickled by all these coincidences.
Then Geo has me look up a couple of the production people on the show, and the director, it turns out, worked on S1 SPN as well as several XF eps and other genre stuff.
Cool.
I think we'll stick with this one, at least for a while. We'll see.
