You know? We actually have a Rt. 666 here in town. Very disconcerting the first time I saw the sign.

For some reason, this ep gets mocked mercilessly. And I must admit, I'm a little puzzled as to why. Yes, the execution is a little cheesy at times. And then there's the gal who played Cassie, whom I really wasn't impressed with. But the premise of the ep? Works for me.

The first thing I notice upon re-watching this is Sam. Specifically, that their last hunt ("Faith") was in Nebraska, and the boys are now heading toward Pennsylvania. Away from California. And Sam seems to be the one intent on getting them to PA. Which tells me that he has reached a point of reduced obsession regarding finding John.

Also? This is the flip side of the rescuing friends catalyst in "Skin." There, it was Sam wanting to help his friends. Here, it's Dean wanting to help an old friend. Which apparently surprises Sam. That Dean would have an "old friend," and that Dean dated someone for longer than a one-night stand, and then anger that Dean some girl the big family secret while he lied to Jessica for a year and a half.

Also also? I love how specific Dean is about where he met Cassie. She was going to college in Athens, Ohio, which means Ohio University. Which has a reputation for hauntings and their huge Halloween parties. Ohio shout-out FTW.

I kinda love Sam's little brother attitude of enjoying seeing his big brother nervous around a girl. But then the realization that Cassie is the one who dumped Dean really takes him aback.

I also like that Sam understands that Dean needed to open up to someone. "Everyone needs to . . . " And Dean's response, "Yeah? Well, I don't," just hurts.

One of the best things about this ep is the love scene and the afterglow, but I've already written about that at length, so I won't repeat myself here.

On the flip side, one of the weakest points of the ep is the actress playing Cassie. She's not horrible, but she's got a very stagey way of delivering her lines. Almost more of a college level theater major level of talent, rather than an experienced TV actor. Her words just come out very . . . stagey, not quite natural, and it gets annoying. Which makes the character annoying. Oh, she's a lovely girl, no doubt, very pretty with a slim figure, but I wonder if I'd like the character better if someone else had played the role. As it is, I really don't see this character and Dean together for any sort of long run.

Also annoying is the fact that she insisted "no more excuses" from either of them, and Dean was okay with that, but in the end, she's the one breaking it off with him. Again. (Now I want to write a fic wherein Sam or Dean finds her wedding announcement in a newspaper. Oh, Dean.)

Also x3 . . . Demolitions and renovations can awaken spirits. "Like that theater in Illinois." I WANT THAT EPISODE!!!!! Seriously, Kripke. Four years of a ghost hunting show and not once have the boys had a hunt in a theater. What's wrong with you? Every theater worth its salt (no pun intended) has a ghost story attached to it. Even if it's completely fabricated.

Also x4 . . . Dean is the one who mentions the Flying Dutchman. Keep that in mind when we get to "Red Sky at Morning." Because that is probably the single most annoying point in that ep for me. Dean is well aware of the Flying Dutchman and its significance. Why can't you writers remember that?

And then we have the resolution to the ghost truck issue, which is drawing the evil spirit toward the hallowed ground of a church. How then is it that demons can waltz right into a church without so much as a cringe? According to Show, the ground is hallowed, regardless of whether or not the church is still there. Demons should not be able to just stroll into a church without some sort of visible consequences. (I suppose Sam's "might" could be seen as a loop hole on that point, but still . . . )

And finally, we have Sam stating that the thought that he might be wrong about the solution never even crossed his mind. Um . . . Sam? You know how I've mentioned your pride issue? It's showing there a little bit, buddy.

Of course indignant!Dean is always amusing, so I'll let it go.

All in all, maybe not one of the strongest eps, but still, lots of good Brother interaction and banter, and we get a little insight into Dean's past (as well as the sight of Dean's shoulders) while Sam was gone, and we get to see Sam being little brother, and the boys are working together like the team they are.

So it's all good in my book.
