First, I want to back up a little bit. There was a point in "Asylum" wherein I thought, "Oh. This must be one of the eps Colin Ford looked at to play Sam." Because one of Sam's faces? The way Jared did it? Was exactly the way Colin played it. *nods* Anyway . . .

The very thought of posting a review for "Scarecrow" exhausts me because there is so much that could be delved into. But we won't go there right now.

No, right now I will say that "Scarecrow" provides an excellent example of my willingness to suspend my disbelief. Why? Because the apple trees look nothing like apple trees (they're actually hazelnut trees, I think). And yet I didn't notice.

Also? Apples. In Indiana. In April. NOT HAPPENING, folks. That right there should have told Dean that something was not right. But did it even register on my radar? Nope. Not the way no snow in Michigan in December did in "Supernatural Christmas." And that they made an actual part of the story. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Also also? Again with the creepy! \o/ Because, dude. Very creepy. Particularly the empty cross piece.

Also x3? Meg. This was the first ep that kind of twigged me out with the blood scrying and that sort of thing. I didn't like Meg; didn't trust her as far as I could throw her. Then to find out she was blood scrying and evil. *shudder* Upon rewatch, though, I notice how agile and confident she (Nicki Aycox) is in her body. She's not particularly leggy, but the way she moves, she does seem like she's all leg. *shrug* And the Meg snark and undercurrent of "Sam, get away from her. She's bad news." Yeah.

But the most important thing about "Scarecrow" is the development of the brother relationship. Here's where we address and resolve what happened in "Asylum." But first, we get John's call to the boys. And what's the first thing Sam asks? "Are you hurt?" Sam loves his dad. Is concerned about his dad. Doesn't agree with his dad and readily argues and is all obstinate, but his first question was one of concern for his personal well-being. And how much must it have hurt to watch Dean squelch his own concern in order to follow John's orders? You can see him actually shift gears from worried son to obedient son. It's . . . kind of amazing to behold.

Then there's the argument in the car. I won't go into details, but the upshot is that Sam leaves Dean (again), and Dean leaves Sam. They're both hurt, they're both stubborn. And with Dean, you can see the self defenses fall into place. Sam says he wants Dean to leave him behind And it hurts to watch them.

BUT . . . they must have learned from the Stanford estrangement, because they do eventually end up talking to each other, in as honest a way as they can. They talk about the case first (smart!Dean outlining things for Sam, and Sam giving his ideas back to Dean. Bouncing the case back and forth to come up with a solution, even though Sam is in a bus station), something comfortable and familiar. Dean is willing to continue hunting on his own, though given a choice, he'd rather have Sam with him. Then Dean apologizes to Sam--in Dean-speak, which Sam understands--and tells Sam he admires him for knowing what he wants and going after it, and standing up to John. If we follow Dean's line of thinking, Dean wishes he could stand up to John in the same way. And Sam apologizes to Dean, agrees to keep in touch, and realizes that Dean is letting him go.

But when Dean suddenly becomes incommunicado, Sam knows Dean well enough to know that something's wrong. And so he chooses to save the family that is there with him rather than search for the family member who will help him with his quest for revenge. Sam abandons his search for John in order to save Dean.

Finally, the conversation at the bus station. Dean, again, ready to let Sam go, and Sam choosing to stay. A wonderful, logical, heartfelt speech, and Dean, in full Dean-speak, accepting it by making light of it.

Oh, Winchesters. How I love thee.
