Yes, because I am that desperate (and/or pathetic)

To keep me busy between now and Thursday, I pulled out Jensen's season of Smallville (the only season I own or have even seen any part of), and I've come to some conclusions.

First, I think I mentioned a long while back that when I discovered Jane Seymour was playing Jensen's mother, I was very impressed. Although I'm not a "fan," Jane Seymour has always left me with a positive vibe. I first saw her when I was a child watching the original Battlestar Galactica. She played Serena, Boxy's widowed mother who fell in love with and married Apollo (and shortly thereafter, gets killed). I've never been able to bring myself to watch Somewhere In Time, but I've always heard good things about it. My Aunt J2 was a fan of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. But what really impressed me was when Ms. Seymour was part of our public library's speaker series when I worked at the PAC. She seemed to genuinely enjoy her time with her audience, and she was a very interesting person to listen to. She was having such a good time talking to the audience and answering questions, in fact, that she ran over her allotted hour and we kind of had to pull her from the stage.

And as Jensen said at a con a while back, she's an older woman, and she played his mother, but . . . I believe his exact words were . . . "damn, is she sexy." She seems to be aging gracefully, and I hope I age as well.

So when I was speeding through SV (because really? The show holds zero interest for me, though some of the actors turned in good performances, and I rather liked some of the supporting characters), I'd watch Jensen's stuff, of course, and Jane's. And when they were on screen together? I really liked the interaction between the actors.

Now, the interaction between the characters? That's another story.

It would have been a completely different show, and far more disturbing, if they'd actually delved into the Oedipal/Norman Bates thing they had going. And I noticed this time around how well Jensen plays the sweet, loving, devoted boyfriend who starts going off the deep end when his overbearing, possessive mother comes to town. And at the end? Jason is downright unhinged. The first time I saw it, I thought it was a little over the top (and I still think killing Jason with a chunk of meteor is overdoing it a wee bit), but watching it through this time, watching her manipulate him, and watching him fall back into that overbearing relationship . . . It could have been really fascinating (and, like Norman Bates, it would have strayed into psychological horror, which was not what the show was about).

So, I guess my point is, I really liked watching Jensen and Jane work together, and they made a disturbing storyline interesting without being blatantly disgusting about it. Because the hints and innuendo and manipulation are far more interesting.

I don't watch Smallville, but seem to remember Jensen or someone saying that particular storyline was supposed to go for 2 seasons, but Jensen got some strange new show about brothers who hunt things so they speeded up the storyline.

You should really watch Somewhere in Time. It's wonderful.

Yes, Jensen has said that he was originally signed for 2 seasons, but then this other WB gig came up.

Maybe I'll put Somewhere In Time on my Netflix queue

Do see Somewhere in Time! It's very beautiful and romantic and mind bendy if you are into Time Travel Tales (which you know *I* am!) And young Christopher Reeve *sighs*

I never watched Smallville either (except for the episode that had Christopher Reeve! HA!) A 2 season Oedipal/Norman Bates story arch... wonder where that might have gone. But squashed by meteor is a bit harsh! Just 'cause your actor gets a different gig about some brother dudes hunting monsters or something- eh that'll never go anywhere.

I DID watch Gilmore Girls and when Jared's character had to be written out (because of this monster fighting gig) they pretty much just turned him into a a bitter whiny brat who decided to grab up his ball and go home in a snit never to darken anyone's door again. A character assassination as it were... but better than getting squashed by a meteor? Mayhaps...mayhaps.
And yes, I desperately need to get by own dang LJ account but until then... LEDERHOSEN!

I know but then it's Smallville, i think even if they wouldn't speed up things they wouldn't go THAT way. But i'd watch, oh, i'd watch because it'd be very interesting to watch.

Oh, I'm sure they would never have gone THERE, but it was really interesting to watch the interplay between the actors. Jason trying to hold onto his girlfriend and "normal" and sanity, and Genevieve manipulating her son and playing on his doubts and insecurities. And at the very end, if you can see through all the cheese, Jason is so freakin' desperate. It would have made for a intriguing, and very dark storyline.

And quite frankly, there were some places where Jensen/Jason gave me the creeps.

Seymour is the female lead of my mom's favorite movie of all time: the 1982 version of the Scarlett Pimpernel, which also stars the amazing Ian McKellan as the villain. I remember always wishing I could look just like her (she's aged remarkably well, and is still lovely, but this was when she was pretty young and she was just luminously beautiful back then). That, and the movie's quite enjoyable all 'round. Buckling of swash and thwarting of evil schemes and all that.

(If memory serves, Somewhere In Time was not a half bad flick. My mom watched it mostly because Seymour was in it and I remember we both enjoyed it.)

I remember they had the entire central cast of "The New Network show, Battlestar Galactica" on some talk show or other for PR. It was the day they had filmed Apollo and Serena's wedding, and Seymour and Hatch had been swooning in soft light and candlelight and syrupy mood music all day long. They hadn't shaken it off, yet, and were leaning in to each other like, well, like newlyweds. How much of it was character bleed and how much moonshine I'll never know. I do know it made the scene (which aired weeks later) much more interesting to me.

You really should give yourself the present of Somewhere in Time. The production values were not very high, but it's a charming little movie, nonetheless, sold entirely by the skill and dedication of the cast. Seymour and Reeve are at a simmer all through, and their rapport is just lovely to watch. My husband, the hardened cynic, was heard to sniffle while watching--and that he actually watched, once it became apparent the movie was a (shudder) love story, is a tribute in itself, IJS.

Seymour named one of the twins she gave birth to during filming Dr. Quinn after Reeve, and maintained that friendship till Reeve's death.

(Hi. I'm reading back through your acting/actor posts, as you suggested. Interesting!)
