Do we need a secondary venue?

With the wonkiness of LJ in the past week, a lot of us have been really frustrated with not being able to post, to communicate with one another, to contact peeps we only contact through LJ.

It seems a viable alternative might be prudent.

I know several of my LJ peeps really have no interest in Dreamwidth. I've also seen it indicated that DW users don't want DW to be inundated by LJ users.

It occurs to me that there is another alternative.

Long before I was talked into joining LJ, I was active on a number of Yahoo Groups. For those unfamiliar with YahooGroups, they act in a very similar manner to an LJ comm. I'm not sure about posting vids, and photos are posted in a photo folder available to the group.

Groups can be open or moderated, membership required or not. I spent many, MANY hours on my YahooGroups list. Too many. It's simple, convenient, and serves most of the purposes we use LJ for.

If anyone is interested, let me know. Perhaps a couple of us could start a group and co-mod or something.

I'm on DW and I crosspost everything, and I would much prefer to not have to join something else as well.
I really don't think you should rule out DW as an option.

The only way I could even think of considering DW is if there's a free option. I'm already paying for LJ. I can't afford to pay for two social networking sites.

Er. there IS a free option. You just need to ask someone already on DW for an invite code, you use the invite code, and you get a free journal.
I'm puzzled that you thought there wasn't a free option.

Well, that's what I mean. Up-thread, someone said they paid into a new DW account, and I remember when several of my f-listies had those free invite codes to give away, but it sounded like those were limited time things. (Like a person would have 5 invite codes to give away, and once they were gone, that was it.)

I didn't know if there was an option to just go to DW and sign up like I did with LJ, where I created an account, selected an option, and voila.

Yes, people do get a finite number of invite codes, but they keep on being given more. Me, I have more invite codes than I know what to do with, I've just given up on informing people because nobody seemed to be interested.

There's also a comm on DW which is specifically for people looking for invite codes, or looking to give them away. So it really is not hard to get them! The main purpose of invite codes, IMHO, is to keep out spambots.
