I will not get sucked into another fandom

I won't I won't I won't.

No, seriously. I won't.

I only do one fandom at a time, and once I've left a fandom, I don't usually go back. I wasn't ready to get into SPN when Izhi introduced me. I was quite happy in L.A. with the Brothers Eppes, doing FBI math. But then the Winchesters seduced me, coaxed Musey into the back of a black '67 Chevy, and while I'm still heartily fond of the Eppeses & Co. (and miss them from time to time), I haven't really looked back.

Besides that, this other show that's sort of waving at me is lacking in something that sucks me into fandom: a single (or several) charismatic actors whom I'm interested in as people. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm loving the characters in the show, and the way the actors are portraying them. But none of them have caught my attention to the point of "Oh. I want to find out what he/she is like in RL." Very much like The Unit; LOVED the show, loved the actors, might have been casually interested in their careers. But never was interested in looking further. Loved the characters, but nothing about the actors particularly reached out and grabbed me.

Also, the shows I tend to get involved in fandom with are genre shows: H:TLJ, TS, SPN. I wrote fic for N3, and even followed a forum or two, but I never really participated. LOVE the show, though. Anyway . . .

So, I'm noticing a decline in SPN fic that interests me. A lot of the writers I really enjoyed upon joining the fandom are no longer writing, and finding current timeline stuff that I like is nearly impossible. So . . . I've been wandering elsewhere. I ran across a pretty decent fic of this other show, but I'm having difficulty finding more.

Oh. What show, you ask? Well, check out this article.

See #5 on the list? That one.

The new Hawaii Five-0. It kind of surprised me that it made the list--Top 5, even--but then I got to thinking about it: It's got three actors who were formerly in genre shows There's an alum from Moonlight, from Lost, and from the new BSG. (None of which I watched.) And Scott Caan kind of really cracks me up with his portrayal of Danny.

I'm still trying to suss out my character preference, because I kind of like the whole team. At first I thought I would probably gravitate toward Chin, but I kinda find Danny freakin' hilarious with his fish-out-of-water, worry wart, by-the-book practicality, especially when it's juxtaposed to Steve's less than orthodox approach to investigation and crime solving. Their car arguments amuse me no end. And I kind of really love Kono on the team, a strong, sensible female team member.

So, anyway. Any other f-listies who like H50? Any fic recs? I haven't really been paying attention beyond casual viewing, so I'm looking more for action/h/c then character exploration.

And this is just to pass the time when I'm alone in the quiet office, with no sound but the people walking around upstairs. I'm not going to get sucked into the fandom or anything. Unless Jensen somehow ends up on the show. In which case, all bets are off.

Here's the thing about H50 - personally, I think the writing is fairly silly to bordering on face-palming most of the times.

But the relationships more than make up for it. It's all about the team love, and the bromance between Steve and Danny.

I think the closest comparison is The Sentinel - weak writing, but it's all about the relationship (or 'ships).

So it's pretty happy-making right now, and I've seen a lot of bleed-over from disenchanted Supernatural fans who are moving on to H50. It's a rapidly growing fandom right now. :)

The writing really doesn't bother me. It's buddy-cop-crime-drama-set-in-Hawaii escapism. What's not to like? I'm not really looking for edgy in my escapism, if you know what I mean. :)

But, yeah. I really enjoy the relationships, and the interweaving of relationships.

You know TS! Were you ever involved with the fandom?

In my LJ surfing, I've noticed a few names I recognize from the SPN fandom. I'm not surprised there's a lot of bleed-over. Buddy/brotherhood/bromance shows usually do have a lot of crossover. *nods*

Oh! And for an even more obscure connection to my previous fandoms, the exec producers, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, got their start on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. The irony is that a significant portion of the fandom blamed them for ruining the show, and the character of Iolaus specifically.

Oh, yeah, I think - if I'm remembering correctly - that was my first major online fandom after Trek of various incarnations, back when the senad list was the main forum. I got hooked hard, went to one of the Vancouver cons, was involved in the push to save the show on UPN. The whole nine-yards. :D

Oh, you asked about writers, and I'm not really getting into the fic too much yet, but I do know both destina and dotfic have written a couple of pieces. I'm sure there are some others on my flist that I'm blanking on right now.

Right now I'm mostly just watching it too - and occasionally throwing out a comment or three on someone's LJ, and I think I've posted about it two or three times myself. Slow-going. Don't know if it'll become a big thing for me, but it's mindless fun right now. And, yeah, Hawaii, pretty locale, boys and girls in bathing suits, surfing, when they're not solving crimes. What's not to like? Hee!

Ah, you were in the TS fandom before I got there, then. The show had been cancelled by the time I got into it. Saw it on Sci-Fi.

I don't expect it to become the all-consuming fannish focus that other things have been. More like my interest in CSI (which up until I was introduced to SPN was my Thursday night "do not call me do not talk to me don't even look at me funny" show). It's a definite block in the Monday night schedule, but I don't rewatch it and study it the way I do when I'm fannish about something.

But it's a fun show, and we really like it. (And hey, the really cool theme music doesn't hurt. :D )

I did see dotfic's name in my surfing, but I don't think I'm familiar with destina.
