Alas and alack

I've often thought that perhaps I should read at least the first Twilight book, if for no other reason that to be able to tell my young relatives with authority not to buy into that depiction of vampires because it's just wrong. (I have already made it clear that vampires do not, never have, and never will sparkle.) But I've never found the inclination to actually follow through.

Well, the other day I read that Lee Pace (of Pushing Daisies and The Fall) will be joining the Twilight film saga. Thank goodness it's not Jensen. Then I'd actually have to watch it. As it is, the fact that Lee Pace will be joining the cast gives it a little bit more legitimacy than I credit it with.

All this to say that next week's SPN . . . EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I seriously tried to read the first book - but like so many things other people are sure I would like, I didn't. I barely made it through three chapters because the writing is horrible.

"Oh, but it's written as if it was really written by a fifteen year old" then I guess I know a very unusual group of fifteen year olds because they all write better than that.

I also found it impossible to like the heroine.

I shocked people at work when I said "I didn't like the first book, why would I go see the movie?"

One of my nephews (the 17-year-old) says he likes the book(s), but I think that's mostly because his girlfriend likes the books. He said it is like reading a teenage girl's diary. Which I found amusing coming from him. Then I asked, "Is Edward really a stalker?" And he kind of shrugged and nodded.

It's just . . . what little I know about it, it seems so weird to me and is kind of irksome that it seems to be re-writing the popular concept of some classic horror staples.

Oh, good i don't like Pace or i'd feel miserable :\

I don't know anything about Lee Pace as a person, but as an actor, I like him. Especially in The Fall and the type of work he put into that. He was basically acting 24/7 for a while on that one, in order to keep things "real" for his young co-star.

I also liked him in Pushing Daisies, and before that, Wonderfalls.

But that's all I've seen him in.

Oh, i didn't mean i don't like him as a person, i don't know him at all in that aspect. I just don't find him physically attractive (my thing, don't bother to understand) and i hate the whole concept of Pushing Daisies. You'll laugh to know why.

I have so many issues with the Twilight author I won't inflict that punishment on myself to read (or buy, and support her notion of authorhood) her books. But we're newly living in PNW, so I succumbed to curiosity and rented the first movie. Absolutely gorgeous, really. But it would have been improved by use of the mute button.

I don't know anything about the author, and what I've heard of the fandom isn't exactly what you'd call complimentary. (Of course, we know well that it's usually the extreme elements of a fandom that get the majority of the press.) And I really don't know that I want to see the movie without reading the book, though maybe it would be less painful.

It's not on my list of priorities, though, that's for certain. Heh.

There are movies or series I rewatch as much for the location (Brokeback Mountain, Highlander) or the set (Green Card, Roxanne) as the sometimes negligible plot--my set dresser's heart, I guess. We trekked out to Roslyn, where Northern Exposure was filmed, just because it's a day trip and we hadn't explored in that direction. We've visited Concrete, which wasn't where Wishful Thinking was filmed, and plan a trip to Squamish, where it was. Living this close to Vancouver, we'll eventually explore locations from Dark Angel, SGA, SG:1, X-Files, Jeremiah, Eureka, and SPN, as well as other series--especially as a lot of them overlap.

Knowing the Twilight books are set around Forks, WA, and filmed in the eastern part of the state and the Portland, OR area, I was curious. Meyer self-admits she doesn't like vampires or vampire stories. Her "vampires" are toothless vegetarians, fit only to get pre-pubescent girls' emotions churning. She should have been marketed as YA. The only "books" connected with Meyer in any way I would consider purchasing are the director's handbook and the movie companion.

Those are my reasons for clandestinely renting the movie and staying far, far away from the "books"--totally aside from her fandom.

So why the frell is she writing about them?

Sorry. I suppose that's her business, not mine. But it makes no sense that she would base her series on something she doesn't like. I'm really looking forward to see what kind of jabs SPN takes at it.

I find it very interesting that New Orleans had no native vampire lore until Anne Rice wrote the Vampire Chronicles. Now they have vampire tours in addition to the voodoo and cemetery tours.

I've long wanted to visit the PNW. It looks so beautiful in all the shows I've seen. And I'd really like to travel far enough north to see the aurora. That would be awesome.
