Bad Day at Black Rock, Sin City, Bedtime Stories

Last year's thoughts on early-ish S3.

Not a whole lot to say about these three eps, because they're pretty much continuing apace with what's been going on.

BDaBR: Introduces Bela. Bela, in hindsight, is something of a problematic character. She sold her soul, and at the end of the season, we discover that if she kills Sam (and Dean), she's out of the deal. I believe a case can be made for this being the reason she arranged to cross paths with the Brothers Winchester in the first place and targeted John's lock-up stash for her business dealings. But here's the thing: if Sam is supposed to be Lucifer's meat suit, how then does it benefit Lilith to have him dead? Now, if she wants to be top banana, it makes sense, but then when breaking the final seal, she goads Sam into action and gets herself killed. She, like, has a last minute change of heart? Bzuh?

But anyway, back to Bela. She could have been an interesting character. She presented us with a different aspect of the hunting world, and she could have become an adversarial informant of some sort--well, you know, except for the part about shooting Sam and claiming she can aim, she only grazed him, when she knew his luck was sour and it wouldn't matter how well she aimed, she could still kill him. Or the, you know, interfering with the whole saving people/hunting things deal-y. But I think she could have been a useful character if she'd been utilized better.

Anyway, BDaBR has some delightful stuff: "I lost my shoe" *hugs Sam*; "I'm Batman," and a cursed trinket that stems from common superstition. Good stuff there.

Sin City: Again, not much to say, so I'll say this: Jensen was looking really good in this season. I don't know what it is, because he always looks good (well, 99.9% of the time), but dang.

So in this one we get a bit of background on things Dean did what Sam was at Stanford (the succubus in Canarsie), and working a case with Richie. And I must admit, Richie kind of cracks me up.

We get that Dean wants to believe in God. *hugs Dean*

We get a little more background on the demon army thing.

Plus, we get Don S. Davis (RIP) in a guest spot.

Bedtime Stories: I gotta admit, I kinda like this ep. It's a decent stand-alone case, with angst of the deal sprinkled in. And the little girl reminds me in facial features of my cousin's daughter at that age.

We get Sam, desperate to save Dean, and Dean, knowing the risk too great, having none of it. Determined Sam and stoic Dean.

Of course, it kind of makes me want to slap both of them, because Sam is impatient and goes off half cocked, and Dean has the underlying sense of not being worth the risk. (I think Sam's impatience will be a separate entry.)

Also, something that jumped out at me: When the CRD (the Sandy!CRD) talks about the demon who holds the contract, she speaks of said demon as "he." We find out later, of course, that Lilith holds the contract. So here's the question: Did Crowley (as head of the CRDs, as I understand it) gift Dean's contract to Lilith? And to what purpose? Hm . . . .

I figured that at this point her goal *is* to be "top banana." None of the seals have been broken yet, right--Dean breaking in hell is the first one. (And they can't guarantee that's going to happen yet, especially given John's unnatural resistance! *g*)

Of course, Lilith could get into trouble later if she did away with Lucifer's meat suit (and that IS problematic for the mytharc), but His Darkness is not around (and neither is the YED at this point), so....she may just be rolling out her demonic ambitions, for now.

I can totally go along with Lilith trying to become Grand Empress Pubah at this point in the story. That's what it felt like as soon as she showed up, that's the exposition we get from Casey and later Ruby. I don't think Lilith realized her role in the seal breaking until she tried to trap Sam in S4, at which point she still tried to wiggle out of the sitch.

But considering that she was the first demon . . . there's got to be some sort of backstabbing back story going on there with her and Lucifer. Yeah? Maybe? Who knows.

Then there's Ruby. How long was she conniving and scheming to get Sam in the right (WRONG) place at the right (WRONG) time. Was she actually in communication with Lucifer? Was she Azazel's back-up plan? Was she a free agent acting on her own?

Questions, questions!

I love Bad Day! For one Gordon! How I love Gordon. For two Kubrick! Ahh- He was the awesome! I totally would have watched a SPN Spin-Off of the Gordon and Kubrick Happy Fun Hour! Kubrick's friend who insists on eating at Big Gersons (Famine's favorite hang out!) and Kubrick so matter of factly saying he likes that they drop the whole onion in the fryer. It's jut those little details that make me squee. It makes the hunters human, moreso than the Road House gangs who were always just sitting around cleaning their guns. I even liked the friendship between Bela's goons. Someone had FUN writing this episode!
But of course: "I Lost my Shoe!" that will never not be funny!
And Dean: "I'm Batman!" HEE! I loved his utter glee at taking out the baddies with a pen and a remote control. Poor Sam takes such a whumping- and yet, this is a truely delightful episode. Sorry Sam!
And I agree, Bela COULD have been an interesting character. As it was- she's just a hateful thing (And I love Gordon and Meg!) Bela rubs me wrong because of her utter selfishness and greed. There't nothing about her I can find to squee about. Not even the fact she's a cat person! Nope. No Bela love EVER!

Lilith? Ya know. At this point it could be argued that yeah, she was trying to angle things her way. Lucifer was still in the cage and maybe she had an inkling that that last seal meant her death. Maybe she was out to stick it to the Big Boss Man. I could almost respect her for that... even with her Dean killin' ways. But the reality- I doubt Sam = Lucifer's meatsuit was on the drawing board at this point in the writer's room. So anything Lilith did they could work as she's just a MEAN LITTLE GIRL!!!

Sin City and Bedtime Stories, they're ok. Not huge favs- but both with fun moments and very revealing moments. They just don't stay with me for some reason. Hard to comment on them.
Poor Sandy!CRD though. How odd this show killed off both Jared's girls. Hmm...

Oh, I'm sure it wasn't. But that's kind of my point. If you're going to develop a mytharc, there needs to be a logical cohesiveness. You've laid the foundation; you have to build on that. If you're going to ret-con, at least make your ret-conning make sense. Ya know?

Bela . . . Yeah, no real character redeeming qualities there. Meh.
